It's so hot!
How hot is it?
It's so hot that even the tunes I'm
randomly thinking of include a hellish component ... like tunes that feature the
devil speaking.
Here's the second song (see last week's Garden of Allah by Don Henley) that includes the voice of the devil baked into the lyrics and have him making a statement. (Will there be a third or a fourth tune?)
In this classic (redone in double time it seems by the modern Zac Brown Band at an awards show), we get El Diablo boasting: "I bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, 'cause I think I'm better than you"!
Stay cool out there!

(Almost) gone but not forgotten: the letters c, j, q, w, x and y.
Growing up in central PA close enough to Philly, more than one field trip (do they still do those in an overly litigious society?) was to historic Philadelphia -- and I can remember at least one major report I did in school about the genius of Ben Franklin's inventions.
Somehow I did NOT remember that he tried to change our alphabet to be more phonetically based ... but I was reminded of this fact by catching one of those "odd documentaries" that the History Channel runs every now and again that featured old Ben. And I say "odd" in that they mix "reenactments" with actual historical docs and that they tend to occasionally stray toward the hyperbolic end of what comes across sometimes as possible revisionist history telling ...
[Furthermore, this post could have gone a completely different direction in that I learned that the Underground Museum has been closed and will continue to be closed for a two year renovation! So I guess I could have just as easily said ... (temporarily) gone but not forgotten ... the Underground Museum at Franklin Court in Philadelphia!]
As Words with Friends would have had to completely redesign its interface had his idea taken hold, Ben's phonetic alphabet, you are not missed.

Random Scandal Sheet for Sunday 7/29/12
What Chicago is talking about this week:
There's definitely a contingent excited about the fact that the Cards are playing the Cubs here in Wrigley for the weekend -- I know because I had to fight through those crowds to get to the red line to head to the Newberry Library book sale downtown.
[What can I say -- I've always liked books more than sports -- I was just born that way.]
And although that book sale can't even begin to compare to the one time I got in to the Book-of-the-Month-Club warehouse sale in Camp Hill in the late 90's (a decade old belated thanks to you Aunt Robin), it was fun for me to pick up 20 books to add to my home library at an average of $3/book (that's me and my purchases exiting the red line at the Wrigley stop yesterday in the photo). The cheapest -- a Where's Bin Laden "children's book" (the jury is still out on whether it is racist or not -- but it certainly captures a frustrating moment in time post-9/11, pre-Seal Team Six mission) in the style of Where's Waldo. The most expensive -- a local press' printing of a collection of all of the inaugural addresses from W.H. Taft to G.W. Bush.
A little birdie told me that everything was half price today (actually, it was an ancient volunteer), so hie thee hither to score your own haul should you be so minded. Or -- if not -- the final Cards/Cubs game of the weekend starts in just under two hours from the time of this posting.
IT's THE FINAL DAY TODAY FROM 10am-6pm:

Random Soapbox for Saturday 7/28/12
I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...
... it's a sad day for so many reasons when I feel obligated to start these comments with the following disclaimer: I still believe that I can be a Penn State fan and a supporter of Joe Paterno and not have such beliefs be "read" by others as if I support pedophilia. So before all who are so quick to judge in this scenario conclude otherwise, I abhor pedophilia.
I support the criminal process. I support the organizations that work to provide healing to the victims. And I support Joe Paterno as a human (who admittedly made mistakes in how this was handled -- but who also brought much to the campus and to the lives of so many), and the Penn State program as a football program that, although powerful, represented something greater than the typical programs.
I don't support the sanctions. I think there is a Bobby-Ewing-in-the-shower-on-Dallas ridiculousness to the "let's pretend those games weren't won" rewriting of the record books (and I am fully aware that referencing "shower" in these thoughts is not done lightly, as that is the place where one of the crimes was witnessed). I think that a program that was so focused on eradicating the often oxymoronic nature of "student athlete" to lose scholarships creates more victims of a different kind. I think the toppling of statues was an unbelievably overwrought measure and that statue toppling in general should be left for the Saddam Husseins of the world, and should not be a Happy Valley activity.
I think that the powers that be at the NCAA did one thing right in that they are putting their fine money where his mouth was and that they are creating an endowment with the full $60 million to be used for programs that fight child abuse. May that be the long term legacy of this scandal and of Jerry's crimes.
In conclusion, I am loyal. So I am looking forward to the first game of the 2012 season in 36 days.
And I am patient. So I am eagerly anticipating bowl season 2016.
And I am sad. But with criminal prosecution underway and civil lawsuits to follow and increased awareness of "the monsters in our midst" as the byproduct of all of this coverage, I know that "this too shall pass".
And I am ... a Penn State fan.

Random Flashback for Friday 7/27/12
Some folks are just ahead of their time.
This photo is of Skip, my mom's partner (who has since passed on), from twenty years ago ... and the task at hand, according to the back of the picture, is "recreational mining".
I've rarely been west of the Mississippi (once just across the river to Turkey-something-or-other Missouri, a few times these past few years for the annual trips to Palm Springs, and just a week ago to Las Vegas for work), but my mom's been enjoying the nouveau Wild Wild West for many years (she currently resides in Montana) -- and I've been exposed to the beauty of the area through the pictures she's sent to me (and the Louis L'Amour western Time Life books that she used to have delivered to me once a month when I was much younger).
I see this picture, and besides thinking it was probably a good time, I think that Skip should have been a part of the Discovery Channel series chronicling those who learn how to "gold rush" on the job -- if only those kind of reality shows were around in 1992.

Random Thought for Thursday 7/26/12
NOBODY PUTS BABY IN A CORNER
(unless there's an empty box in said corner, and then Baby puts herself in a corner quite contentedly)
or
CAT CONFUSION PRESENTED IN THE STYLE OF MATHEMATICAL PROOF
Axiom #1: I like to sing along to songs. (Yep, I'm that guy that you come rolling up on at the red light who is blasting the music and signing right along at the top of his lungs, allowing the volume of the music to cover up the fact that I may or may not be singing along in tune. It's why I love those long drives across many states -- I can put a concert on for myself).
Axiom #2: Baby lives with me. (She's in the picture, having spent the whole day happily in that box, rolled up in a ball sleeping except for when she posed for the photo. Now that Mauler's passed and there are just two cats in the apartment, she automatically takes the mantle of the "old lady" in the house, at approximately 15 years of age).
Axiom #3: A lot of songs have "Baby" in the lyrics. (Not to an excess, like in little Justin Bieber's hit [which I don't think I'd necessarily be singing along to anyway], but very frequently in a lot of different tunes.)
Theorem: It is confusing for her when I get in a singalong mood and she hears her name said so frequently and so randomly, as evidenced by her quizzical looks that get sent my way during those occasions.
[Forgive me if I forgot the exact style of mathematical proofing. My excuse is that I had Unified Math in high school and spent most of my time learning z-clock arithmetic ...]

I'm taking Batman back.
Used in a sentence ... "I am so sick of the media twisting all things Bat-related into something evil, so I'm taking Batman back."
That means I'm taking it back from bloviating blowhards who thought they could insert the name of the latest movie villain into the political discourse and imply that this film was subliminal campaign messaging.
And I'm taking it back from the mentally unstable who used it to mask the horrific actions that they undertook at that midnight showing in Aurora (and my thoughts are with those who lost loved ones, and with those who are still struggling to recover). So much has been said about "the look" that he had in the courtroom the other day -- but has anyone figured out that it was "the look" of someone who thought he was smarter than everybody else and is now facing the reality that he isn't.
And I'm taking it back for fans everywhere. You might recognize the photo above if you've visited me at any time in the last twenty years -- they are the giant posterboard images that once hung over the Hills in Uniontown PA (that's Catwoman and the Penguin peeking out from behind Michael Keaton's jaw in the BatCowl) that have decorated some spot in my domicile since acquiring them in 1992 ... or the display in the picture below of my ever expanding collection. It's true -- I may be "touched" in my own way in that I have such a BatCollection, but I do so out of respect for the iconic characters and messages that are part and parcel of the BatLegend.
Ever since I was little and the TV show was on after school to entertain me and shape my psyche (I've railed against special guest villains at different times in my personal life -- and I think that there's something almost comforting about knowing who's good and who's evil as you navigate life's crises), I've had a special place for the BatUniverse.
So all you who attempt to besmirch all things Bat are now on notice ... I'm taking Batman back -- and you -- Limbaugh and Holmes and anyone else -- you should just shut the hell up about it.

It's so hot!
How hot is it?
It's so hot that even the tunes I'm randomly thinking of include a hellish component ... like tunes that feature the devil speaking. Here's one of at least two songs (maybe I'll find more ... but at least the second one will be next week's tune, I promise) that include the voice of the devil baked into the lyrics and have him making a statement.
[And be sure to view this right away, as I was kind of shocked to find it on the youtube in light of some aggressive copyright protection-ing that Henley is known to do ...]
In this classic, we get Beelzebub saying ... "It's just like home ... It's so damned hot, I can't stand it ... My fine seersucker suit is all soakin' wet" ... and then we get an evisceration of the legal profession ... just for fun. Good times.
Stay cool out there!

What Mishawaka/Osceola/South Bend is talking about this week:
I don't know about everyone else, but I know that me and mine were talking about these three little boys today ... except that they are no longer so little (see the other pic -- a favorite of mine from last summer) ... and that they are no longer boys.
It may have been one of the last full family summer picnics we'll get, as Teddy is off to the east coast (fingers crossed) post graduation from the Air Force Academy next year and JAC is off to somewhere overseas for a deployment, also with the Air Force (fingers crossed he gets where he wants as well). And Robert, whose graduation we celebrated today, has his life before him and may be on his own path by this time next summer.
We've sure come a long way from the annual Easter Egg hunts ... and late night card games ... and "Dare I Say's" ... and getting treed by Demon ... and although I've heard others say that they are concerned about the up and coming generation, I can say that after having watched these guys grow up and come into their own, I couldn't be more proud of what they've become and how they'll "represent" for the future. We're in good hands after all ...

Random Soapbox for Saturday 7/21/12
I don't mean to go off on a rant here ...
... about my trip to Vegas as my "Theme Week: Vegas Baby" comes to a close ...
... so I won't (ish). After all, millions of dollars have been spent on the marketing campaign that actually is repeated in the above banner in the gate as you are boarding your departing flight. [Of course, you can kind of review my posts since this past Tuesday and put some pieces together -- and no, I did not visit any wedding chapel and no, I did not win enough money to upgrade to first class and/or charter my own flight home, and yes, I did observe, but did not necessarily participate, in some Vegas style jack-douchery.]
Instead, I'll focus my complaining on the gentleman who sat in front of me on the flight home from said trip and who insisted on reclining his seat for every single moment of the flight (when prompted by the flight attendant, he simply raised it up until she left and then put it right back in my space) ... which is why I adjusted that cold stream of constant air to blow on your neckline for the whole second half of the trip. After all, if you hadn't been so hoggish in wanting to have your space and some of mine, that air nozzle stream wouldn't have reached you (and special thanks to American Airlines for allowing to be positionable).
Hey old man -- since you chose to constantly recline into my space, I chose to be a vindictive sombitch. Uncomfortable, wasn't it!

... about my trip to Vegas as my "Theme Week: Vegas Baby" comes to a close ...
... so I won't (ish).

Random Flashback for Friday 7/20/12
So the past few weeks it's been Ashlyn, then Nic, then Ashlyn ... so, of course, tonight is Nic.
And that would be Nicolas, my nephew, some twenty years ago, being a happy smiley baby -- surrounded by stuffed animals, about which he may or may not be oblivious ... it's hard to tell 'cause he's so so focused on smiling for the camera.
And it's not really a stretch to slip this flashback photo into my "theme week: Vegas baby", as I am now in the same state as Nic's mother (Hey Holly!). Sadly, I did not get a chance to see her (as I am car-less on this trip, and as it was mostly work related and I've had little time for social-ness, and, most importantly, as apparently Nevada is a big state and Las Vegas is just a small part of it -- who knew?).
Sometime, somehow -- we will all reconnect in a non-virtual way ... Until then, thoughts of happy smiley babies to each of them and to everyone who briefly pauses to look at this picture and smile along with Nic.

Random Thought for Thursday 7/19/12
So here are three things I've learned since arriving in Vegas ...
1.) Be careful when you open the nightstand drawer. This is what I found ... and although I thought the blue powder in the little baggie at first was something one gets from Heisenberg (gratuitous Breaking Bad reference there, one of the most creative shows in a long time that just returned to AMC), it turns out that it is more likely the powder that bowlers use on their shoes leftover from a recent bowling tournament held here.
2.) Little children and international tourists are very easily distracted by the sights and sounds of Vegas, and therefore you cannot maneuver through a crowd at a brisk pace without stepping on a few toes -- literally. My apologies to all of you whom I stepped on this week.
3.) This property (which I now will not name -- just in case the LVPD are somehow reading this and take an interest in the item I discuss in #1 above) is a Pepsi only property. And no matter how far I search (on premise restaurant, vending machine, etc) ... none was to be found. Not even outside or at a nearby establishment ... and I know -- because I left the hotel property desperately one day at lunch, and inquired of standers-by if they knew where I could get some coke. The first two just looked at me funny (although they may not have spoken English), but the third passer-by gave me a knowing nod and told me to follow him -- at which point I had my a-ha moment and realized that it was not the purchase of Coca-Cola about which he had information.
AND I SWEAR (on that Bible) -- items #1 and #3 ARE NOT IN ANY WAY RELATED!

Random Wordplay for Wednesday 7/18/12
Hangover Heaven.
Used in a sentence: "Now added to my shortlist of things to do in the few hours I have that are not tied up in my work meeting for this week in Vegas ... the Hangover Heaven bus."
And that's a short list that includes the Bellagio Fountains and the Stratosphere Tower thrill rides ... but I will definitely be keeping my eye out for this "service" ... And here's what happens on that bus, as per the article below ...
"Once on the bus, treatment can take less than an hour for a $90 basic IV of saline solution, B vitamins and vitamin C ... the prescription anti-inflammatory Keteroloac or Toradol for pain and Zofran, also known as Ondansetron, for nausea. Acid heartburn can be treated with over-the-counter ranitidine. Patients get a shot of the anesthetic Lidocaine to numb the skin before the IV needle is inserted."
Party on (after the meeting of course)!

Random Tune for Tuesday 7/17/12
And so my time in Vegas has begun (sounds like a theme week of posts -- which I haven't done in awhile) ... but this is a work trip after all, so it sure is starting nice and easy ... a company dinner tonight and meetings bright and early in the morning so nothing overwhelmingly Vegas tonight. [But there is certainly is precedent that it's not really a work party until all my tattoos are on display ... so be warned for the next few nights ...]
This is the view from outside of my window on the 26th floor of Circus Circus. I believe that might be part of the strip in the distance (I'm pretty sure I'm at the far far end of it for the meeting), and the giant circle thingy in the foreground is the dome over the enclosed amusement park for which this casino is known.
I'll know much more (I hope) by the time I leave on Saturday, but, for now, this tune seems appropriate (and the trip is a distraction from recent events) ...

Purposeful Memorial for Monday 7/16/12
Gone but not forgotten: Mauler Jean, seen here within the last year either assisting me as I typed or attempting to get me to stop to pay attention to her.
Tonight, after consulting with the local vet, Mauler was put to sleep. She's been going downhill for the last few months, and her quality of life consisted mostly of sleeping on the cold linoleum of the bathroom floor or bathroom sink until she heard the sound of food of any kind -- hers or someone else's. It appears to have been the combination of a thyroid issue that had reduced her to just over 4 lbs and a heart murmur that was making her super tired -- but then there was also the fact that she was 17 years old.
Which means for almost half of my life, she was close by -- in all kinds of houses and apartments and with all kinds of fellow pets. She was the one cat that didn't run when Demon was in the same space, content to let him lick her into a wet mass of fur. [As a matter of fact, in the house in Lebanon, she would sleep on my chest while I slept on the couch in the winter (my room was in the attic there, and it wasn't the place to be on cold cold nights), and she would wake up when DJ started getting ready for work to head up to greet Demon super early each morning.] She was partially raised by the ferret back in the day, and I'll never forget the moves she seemed to pick up from Little One, when she would put her claws up behind her head and just kick and kick and kick -- what I called her 'Nam flashbacks. And she chased after the other Little One (the box turtle), and was chased by Sassy and Gracie when Shirly lived with us, and she grew old next to Baby and Murder and Mystery (sometimes willingly that close, and sometimes begrudgingly).
There are too many memories to list them all -- like how she used to give a millisecond of warning before using anyone that was nearby as a ladder to climb to get to a higher space, and how I woke up to find her at the top of my pillow, holding each side of my head in a paw while she groomed my bald spot. Always vocal, always in charge, always stubborn (that stubborn streak is probably what caused her to live many months beyond what she should have in the first place), and always oh so lovable ...
As she slipped away tonight, I whispered to her the story I've always told her -- how I found her in the woods, and how she was so small that she slept inside my shirt for the first three days ... and now I have the memories of all of the other 6200+ days that she spent with us as comfort.
And now, for at least that many days looking forward and probably oh so many more, Mauler will be missed.

Random Scandal Sheet for Sunday 7/15/12
What Chicago is talking about this week:
... the 267 pages (reduced to a "cloud bubble" in the image to the left) of a report that is just one more forward-moving step in what will be a long long journey toward healing for a community and a university -- and perhaps most importantly, for the victims of a child predator.
And, just as before, armchair quarterbacking has evolved to armchair "ethic-izing", and many seem eager to pile on to the notion of hoisting Paterno on his own petard, [to bastardize a quote from a classic fictional epic tragedy], seemingly ready to make the assertion that these boys are now all JoePa's victims instead of just Jerry's.
Because the crimes committed against the innocent were so heinous, it seems easier to process this by finding a way to place the blame and to posit suggested sanctions against the university's current football program. "Shut down the program", say some, and ... "allow the players to transfer out at no penalty". To me, that seems a little like making the sons pay for the sins of the fathers, and in wanting to see something symbolic to help release the pain and guilt and suffering caused by the situation, suggestions that would punish the wrong group of people.
If only as much energy that is being spent on all of this armchair commenting was instead directed to helping the victims of the abuse. If only Chris Hansen had somehow intervened and captured footage of the predator in the act. If only the initial investigation had been successful and had taken Sandusky away before he could groom others (and the disappearance of Ray Gricar remains one of the most shadowy aspects of this whole thing, a mystery with no new leads even after the Freeh report). The "if onlys ..." could go on and on for infinity.
In retrospect ... for some, it's a shocker -- JoePa was human and made mistakes. In my opinion, if that catches you by surprise, then shame on you for buying into a cult of celebrity and in being blinded by your own shortsightedness. But let's not let shortsightedness become an epidemic and let's not have people confuse what a legacy is. It's unmistakable that the Sandusky situation will be an ever present footnote, but the legacy of Joe Paterno will be the program that he built and the focus that he placed on creating true student athletes and the good that he did in that community (Sandusky notwithstanding).
Finally, here are the closing paragraphs of the family statement that was released this week:
"Joe Paterno wasn't perfect. He made mistakes and he regretted them. He is still the only leader to step forward and say that with the benefit of hindsight he wished he had done more. To think, however, that he would have protected Jerry Sandusky to avoid bad publicity is simply not realistic. If Joe Paterno had understood what Sandusky was, a fear of bad publicity would not have factored into his actions.
We appreciate the effort that was put into this investigation. The issue we have with some of the conclusions is that they represent a judgment on motives and intentions and we think this is impossible. We have said from the beginning that Joe Paterno did not know Jerry Sandusky was a child predator. Moreover, Joe Paterno never interfered with any investigation. He immediately and accurately reported the incident he was told about in 2001.
It can be argued that Joe Paterno should have gone further. He should have pushed his superiors to see that they were doing their jobs. We accept this criticism. At the same time, Joe Paterno and everyone else knew that Sandusky had been repeatedly investigated by authorities who approved his multiple adoptions and foster children. Joe Paterno mistakenly believed that investigators, law enforcement officials, University leaders and others would properly and fully investigate any issue and proceed as the facts dictated.
This didn't happen and everyone shares the responsibility."

And after the discussions of power and money and corruption and culpability eventually fade, I would argue that we also all share the responsibility for the healing to begin -- which means focusing on assisting the victims and on increasing the awareness that is necessary to stop these types of predators from continuing their abuse, not on the misdirection of grafting Sandusky's legacy on to Paterno's legacy.
Of course, that's just me sitting in my armchair expressing myself, so take it for what that's worth ...

Random Soapbox for Saturday 7/14/12
I don't mean to go off on a rave here, but ...
... I've always been a believer that everyone has a story. Maybe it's the "writer-ly" instincts in me, but I've always been fascinated with the concept. I'm not much when it comes to small-talk, but put me in a room with people, and I will attempt to suss out the deeper story that each person has to tell. And, happily, Facebook helps me feed that fascination in new and exciting ways -- and nothing is more interesting that stumbling on something that is profoundly inspirational and motivational as well.
To whit: take the story of JD Ulsh (a classmate of mine at LVC in the early nineties) as told on his blog (the image for which appears in this post, or you can find it [or the Facebook version of it] at the links below). JD's ongoing stories of success and recovery are told there against the backdrop of a horrific car crash that he (and his family) survived in December 2007. Having been told that he had a 3% chance of survival, he faced down the "reality" that he might not walk again ... and through his determination and perseverance (and the support of his family and a strong religious belief), he beat those odds.
And those three little words ("beat those odds") in no way begin to convey the journey he's been on. You'll have to peruse his blog to begin to get a sense of how far he's come since that day. But trust me, if you are thinking that you're having a difficult day and are in need of perspective ... or inspiration ... or motivation ... it will be worth your time to complete said perusal.
In closing, consider his quote on the header of his blog: "Your current circumstance does not determine how far you will go, only where you begin."

Random Flashback for Friday 7/13/12
Here's how my recent summer flashbacks have been playing out ... one week Nicolas ... the next week Ashlyn ...(my nephew and niece that I got to see grow up from afar back in the day) ...
That being said, this photo is sans birthday bike (which was in the flashback from two weeks ago when it was Ashyln's last turn), but eagle eye viewers will note that it appears to be the same play area that seems to have gotten a lot of use back in late spring/early summer 1992.
And ... I promise ... I don't have their whole lives in pics to post (and no embarrassing photos!) ... but I do have a couple of these adorably cute ones that I feel almost obligated to share. Now no more until the holidays!
And -- thanks to my work trip next week, I might actually be in the same state as them in just a few days, which has never before happened!

Random Thought for Thursday 7/12/12
Ready ... set ... go ... over the course of the next 10 days, I will be ...
... surviving a Friday the 13th (I hope) ...bar crawling on the night of Friday the 13th (here in Chicago for the first time in over a month) ... recovering the day after ... recovering the day after that (that's a side effect of being 40 now -- it takes two days to recover and un-bender myself) ... having a vet evaluate Mauler on Monday to see what can be done (if anything) ... leaving for my first ever trip to Vega$ (it's 85% a work trip from Tuesday through Saturday, but there will be some time to ride that roller coaster on top of that casino and to see what is to be seen in the 110+ degree heat) ... waiting for the Emmy nominations that will be announced on the 19th ... enjoying the release of the 8th non-animated non-classically-serialized Batman feature on the 20th ... and rushing home from Vega$ to get to Indiana next weekend for a late graduation celebration and a rare occurrence of having all three nephews (the one who just graduated and other two who are already militarized) home at the same time (a rare occurrence that may not happen again until the end of this decade) ...
Why is it that all the summer's emotional excitement has to occur at EXACTLY the same time!?!

... surviving a Friday the 13th (I hope) ...bar crawling on the night of Friday the 13th (here in Chicago for the first time in over a month) ... recovering the day after ... recovering the day after that (that's a side effect of being 40 now -- it takes two days to recover and un-bender myself) ... having a vet evaluate Mauler on Monday to see what can be done (if anything) ... leaving for my first ever trip to Vega$ (it's 85% a work trip from Tuesday through Saturday, but there will be some time to ride that roller coaster on top of that casino and to see what is to be seen in the 110+ degree heat) ... waiting for the Emmy nominations that will be announced on the 19th ... enjoying the release of the 8th non-animated non-classically-serialized Batman feature on the 20th ... and rushing home from Vega$ to get to Indiana next weekend for a late graduation celebration and a rare occurrence of having all three nephews (the one who just graduated and other two who are already militarized) home at the same time (a rare occurrence that may not happen again until the end of this decade) ...
Why is it that all the summer's emotional excitement has to occur at EXACTLY the same time!?!

Random Wordplay for Wednesday 7/11/12
Feline Hospice.
Used in a sentence: "Slowly but surely, the apartment is turning into a Feline Hospice for Mauler, the oldest cat (I found her in 1995 as a tiny kitten in the woods of Mt. Gretna)."
I've really just become much more familiar with the concept of hospice due to my bio-dad's illness. [And I should probably stop and thank each of you (particularly those of you in PA) as he's been put on a hospice program for which the federal and state governments are paying. As partisan as you may want to be in the abstract when it comes to the current debates over health care, I now understand hospice to be a wonderful service to provide in someone's final days when he or she has no other resources. So thanks to each of you taxpayers who is helping to fund my bio-dad's death with dignity.]
Even more close to home ... Mauler continues to slowly fade. But she is exceedingly stubborn and still eats quite well and still seems to be fully functioning and is lovable and strongly purrs when she wants to, so it's about slowly adjusting. For instance, there's now a "set of stairs" made of pillows next to the bed since she can no longer jump up on it. [And as proof that laziness is a cat's default setting, the other two now use it (even though they can clearly make the jump).] And she's always been very vocal (it's the Mau in her that is known to vocalize as a breed), so she now makes it known when she wants to be lifted to the coolness of the bathroom sink for water or just to rest. The next adjustment looks to be putting pee pads in front of the litter box as she now no longer wants to climb in (and apologizing in advance to the neighbors for any increase in smells).
This picture is from this past spring cleaning when the mattresses were being flipped and she wanted to climb to the top like she used to in her younger days. And, true to recent form, she made it known that she wanted to be placed up there, where she "posed" for a photo. I just hope that she finds some way to also communicate that "it's time" ... because I'll probably continue to adjust and adapt along with her up until the end.

Random Tune for Tuesday 7/10/12
This tune actually popped into my head during the long drive home from my trip to PA in mid June ... but I remembered it again when I was viewing the PBS Special "Marvin Hamlisch presents: The Way We Were: Songs of the Seventies" ...
[PAUSE: Upon reflection on that last sentence that I wrote, I'm not sure if there is anything else I could type that would better encapsulate the subtext of ... I am old.]
... as Ray Stevens was on that pledge special singing his before-its-time Gaga-esque hit "Everything is Beautiful". This is not that song ... but it does have this stellar second verse:
Well, Harv hit the aisles dancin' and screamin'
Some thought he had religion others thought he had a demon
And Harv thought he had a weed eater loose in his Fruit-Of-The-Looms
He fell to his knees to plead and beg and the squirrel ran out of his britches leg
Unobserved to the other side of the room
All the way down to the amen pew where sat Sister Bertha better-than-you
Who'd been watchin' all the commotion with sadistic glee
But you should've seen the look in her eyes
When that squirrel jumped her garters and crossed her thighs
She jumped to her feet and said "Lord have mercy on me"
As the squirrel made laps inside her dress
She began to cry and then to confess to sins that would make a sailor blush with shame
She told of gossip and church dissension but the thing that got the most attention
Was when she talked about her love life and then she started naming names
Nowhere else but country music can this kind of song go down!

Random Memorial for Monday 7/9/12
Gone but not forgotten: my few hours in NYC last Friday.
It was a super quick visit, and really just for work purposes ... but we did knock off early enough from our training to allow me a few hours to amble about the Big Apple.
Actually, on the way to my work meeting, I did pass what appeared to be the remnants of the Occupy Wall Street crowd. Or, at least, I saw 3 or 4 kids sleeping on cardboard outside of the Wall Street subway stop who looked exceptionally uncomfortable -- although that might have been the combination of 100+ degrees and the obligatory dreads.
And right after I left said meeting, I did try to work my way to the Freedom Tower. I only got one picture from a distance (it's on Facebook in my "How I Spent my Summer Vacation (pt. 2) album") as the whole memorial is blocked off from view in some attempt to only allow those in who have tickets (which makes sense from a security point of view or for raising money) ... so I could only say "yep, tower's going up" ...
But I spent most of my time of my bonus hours in Central Park, with the hustlers and the homeless and the internationals -- the cell phone focused and the ear budded -- the birds, the pigeons, the super skinny squirrels -- the girls hoping to be discovered, the women who might have been discovered a long time ago, the creepy men who were leering at the girls as if they were going to pretend to be someone whose business it was to make a discovery but who really had ulterior motives, and the old ladies who probably were responsible for discovering girls some multi-thousand cigarettes ago -- all flung together in a Babel-esque scenario of multi-lingual-ality. I didn't see anyone famous (or infamous, which I guess are in equal supply in the big city) ... and the rich seemed to be mingling with the poor without issue in some utopian existence.
I did have to fight off the Somalis or the Nigerians or some other authentically African cultural group (and I mean authentic in the either-myself-or-my-parents-literally-escaped-from-a-warlord vein) who seemed to have taken over all of the bike-rick-shaws and who doubted that someone of my recent weight gain could really navigate the park on my own (I did mention that it was a day of 100+ degrees, right?)! We have those methods of travel here in Wrigley -- particularly during the games -- but Chitown is much more racially represented and diversified when it comes to this industry.
And as a final thought -- DON'T EAT THE SNOW CONE that is pictured above. You might be tempted to do so (one more time -- particularly on days of 100+ degrees) when you see everyone walking past. But they are NOT THE SNOW CONES that you think they are -- NOT SHAVED ICE WITH A LIQUID SYRUP SPRAYED ON IT -- but they are instead some chemical concoction that gets pulled out of an ice cream freezer truck. The leading ingredients may be water and sugar (which would seem to be just fine) but it will NOT taste the way you expect to it. I don't want to start a feud with street vendors, but DON'T BUY IT.
All that said, my time spent walking around amidst the rocks that I fully expected to see because I enjoy the "central park" course on Golden Tee, you will be missed (but at least I have the pics by which I can remember you).

Random Scandal Sheet for Sunday 7/8/12
What Chicago is talking about this week:
Sometimes you just want to find happy news -- and sometimes that means searching through story after story about shootings and drug busts and heat-related deaths and financial difficulties and other "bad-things-are-bound-to-happen-in-Gothamesque-cities-like-Chicago-when-Batman-is-not-around". [P.S. I'm eagerly awaiting the next movie on 7.20.12.]
And then sometimes, you click to the breaking news website at just the right time, and the lead story is truly shocking and upsetting (but in just the right way). To whit, here are the first two sentences of "breaking news" tonight:
"With a cherry pit and a wad of spit, a Chicagoan managed to upend a two-family legacy Saturday. Ronn Matt, 46, spit a cherry pit a solid 69 feet, taking the championship title at the 39th annual International Cherry Pit-Spitting Championship at a farm near Eau Claire, Mich."
For the details you know you want to know, check out the link below. [Or, if you're in a more morbid mood, see the second link about dead hot people or the third link about a teenage "party planner" that got busted with balloons, nitrous oxide and a couple of ecstasy pills before he arrived at the shindig.]

Random Soapbox for Saturday 7/7/12
I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...
... I want to devote this post to the soapbox of another -- a military veteran I know who served at Ft. McClellan. And that's Ft. McClellan as in the military installation in Anniston, Alabama. And that's Anniston, Alabama as in the city dealing with the negative health effects of PCB pollution.
And that's PCB as in the industrial item that causes cancer and other adverse health effects (remember the baby bottle debacle that led to awareness of the harmful effects of BPA -- well BPA is a PCB).
The problem -- the town is getting money and attention to try to clean it up ... but the military has yet to come up with a program for those veterans who served during that time and who may have been exposed.
There is a petition currently underway that NEEDS your support and signature (there is a July 18 deadline and the process is running far behind its stated goal). Here's how it reads (it's found at the first link below):
"To help Ft McClellan veterans who were stations at Ft McClellan, Alabama and who were exposed to toxic chemicals without their knowledge. These Ft McClellan veterans are currently very sick, many have already died and are now dying because of exposure to toxic chemicals while at Ft McClellan.
HR 2052 Ft McClellan Health Registry Act is currently in legislation in Congress and is stalled in committees. We need to move it out of committees and onto the House floor for a vote. We, Ft McClellan veterans, need this bill. We did not know that we were being exposed to toxic chemicals while at Ft McClellan, Alabama.
We need HR 2052 Ft McClellan Health Registry Act to be moved out of committees and onto the House floor for a vote now! This bill is deliberately being stalled in Congress."
Please take a moment to review the information and to consider signing the petition. And then please consider helping to spread the word. I thank you -- but who am I, really. Instead -- it's the veterans who are suffering the ill effects that, undoubtedly, thank you.
THE PETITION (NOTE THE JULY 18th DEADLINE):

Random Flashback for Friday 7/6/12
Equal time isn't just for candidates this political season.
It's also for the offspring of my sister out West. I realize that sounds so formal ... but I just mean if last week was a shot of Holly's Ashlyn, then this week is a shot of her sibling (not Holly's sibling, or Holly's sibling's offspring, but Holly's daughter's sibling) ... Confused yet?
And so here's a 20 year old picture of baby Nicolas (who's not a baby any more -- although I guess that's obvious, since he's now this age [not even one I think] plus twenty ...) from Mar 1992 (according to the back of the pic).
I'm not quite convinced that he could have cared less that this picture was taken (I think maybe he just woke up?) ... or I guess it could be that the picture was taken on a day like today when 100+ is the norm ... or maybe it's just that he's a baby and I should not try to read anything in to it (as the trainer today at work in NYC correctly pointed out about the way my brain is wired ... said he, "Sometimes it's just about going from point A to point B without reading anything into it!" -- I love it when my trainer is also my therapist.)

Random Thought for Thursday 7/5/12
At some point in the last few years, I've said this every summer (or at least every season of Food Network Star) ... probably mostly to myself, but if alcohol and conversation mixed, maybe even out loud PLUS I know I hinted at it in a post last summer ... but I have to tell you that I would be just fine to hire reality show judges Susie and Bob to follow me around and offer opinions on my life and daily tasks.
They always seem to ask just the right questions, to see through any personality smokescreens, and to see through to the core of the situation at hand. With great empathy, and an ability to articulate spot-on feedback, I'd take a session with them after every challenge I face in my life.
I'm not a food-ie per se (I guess I would be more of an eat-ie), but if I run into them within the next 24 hours when I am oh-so-briefly in NYC (that's 8 hours at an airport, 9 hours in training at work, 6 hours sleeping and 1 hour for sight-seeing of some kind), I might just ask them to come back to Chicago with me!
THEY ARE THE NEXT FOOD NETWORK STARS IF YOU ASK ME:
http://www.foodnetwork.com/the-next-food-network-star/index.html
OR AS I SAID LAST YEAR, LISTENING TO THEM IS LIKE QUALITY THERAPY:

Random Wordplay for Wednesday 7/4/12
100 degrees and knifey.
Used in a sentence: "The local Chicago forecast for the Fourth is 100 degrees and knifey".
And before I say anything else -- Happy Fourth of July to you and yours (unless you are in Canada and reading this, and then happy belated Canada Day) ... Enjoy and be safe.
That being said, Rahm's Chi-town seems to be just a little more violent than Daley's Chi-town. Of course, Rahm's Chi-town is also hotter than Daley's Chi-town was, and there is a maxim that with heat comes more violent behavior -- particularly in those poor neighborhoods on the South and West sides (both Rahm's Chi-town and Daley's Chi-town are known as the most geographically segregated major city in our nation) where gang activity runs rampant and where kids settle disputes with gunfire. In my 'hood, the conflict resolution weapon of choice appears to be knives (hence the "knifey" reference), which I guess is better in that it gives you more of a chance to survive -- but come on people -- enough is damn enough.
One last thing about those gangs -- and this may sound controversial so be sure to not take it out of context. I suspect that all the gangs -- even those with an ethnicity hard-wired into the name of the group -- are run by white supremacists. Because it certainly seems that the end result -- whole generations of minority youth being decimated through violence -- would sure make that group happy. In conclusion -- gangs: Hitler youth rewritten for modern times.
Now -- where was I? Oh right -- Happy Fourth of July. Enjoy and be safe.

Random Tune for Tuesday 7/3/12
This will not be the first time that I have "randomly" chosen this artist on a Tuesday. (On the contrary, a blog search shows me that this may be more like the seventh time she's been referenced.)
For that matter, this will not even be the first time that I have "randomly" chosen this particular Tune. (I last did so after learning of a very dark news story back in early May 2011.)
But as I look to a new month, and as I switch charities for my 2012 Facebook Birthday plans, it immediately comes back to mind for the July charity of my choice: Save the Children (an organization that has been protecting children from abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence in all regions of the world). Let this song continue to be a reminder that none of us should be a silent observer for those innocents who need our protection.
[And because my 2012 Facebook Birthday plans work this way, here are the designated charities for months later in this year:
AUG -- Muscular Dystrophy Association
SEP -- Austism Speaks
OCT -- Susan G Komen for the Cure
NOV -- Greater Chicago Food Depository
DEC -- Trevor Project.]
AND SHE FLIES TO A PLACE WHERE SHE'S LOVED:

Random Memorial for Monday 7/2/12
Gone but not forgotten: my virtual "puppy" of the last 1063 days named Zoe.
The technical explanation appears to be that Facebook changed it's HTML or FDBL font or FGS stuff (or something that I didn't quite capture and that someone else probably understands better than I), so the "social" game MY PUPPY had to close. Actually, it had to morph into something new -- as of today, clicking on it just pulls up this creepiness (without any other instructions): "Talk to me - I am lonely. The more you talk to me, the more I will learn."
Part of me wants the clean break -- the game was very psychological manipulative. From the comments, it seemed that many people chose to play as a way to deal with the grief of having lost actual pets (and, as kooky as this may sound, I chose the name Zoe after Demon was in one of my dreams playing with a companion named Zoe -- Demon was my puppy dog, put down in 2008 after a good long life, and he often visits my dreams, so analyze that if you will ...) but the old game was all into how you will kill your virtual dog if you don't press the right buttons for food and play and going to the bank in some Skinner-esque update for the FB generation.
Of course, in the game makers' truest tactic of manipulation, they salvaged that picture for the new version of the game. And it's hard to resist that listed Staffordshire's face. But the twisted part of me suspects that it might be a clone and that my real virtual Zoe perished in the HTML or FDBL or FGS issues and that this is really some (Zoe') that I don't really know.
Zoe, my Facebook Puppy, you will be missed (unless I cave in and play the new game and it turns out you weren't cloned and you do still exist in your original virtual format).

Random Scandal Sheet for Sunday 7/1/12
What Chicago and Indy and the Ohio Valley (and beyond) are talking about this week:
... yet another deadly weekend Derecho.
It woke me up from an afternoon nap when it blew through Indy (as it blew the 11th floor windows open), and I drove through its tail end yesterday, dodging (that's an unintentional pun, but I do have a Caliber ...) limbs and major road puddles between the Skyway and LSD.
And I say "another ... Derecho" because once I started doing some online research and found out that it was indeed a "land hurricane" that was responsible for all this damage, I remembered that I had just learned that word last year. Since this blog is now powered by google search, I was able to find out that it was about this same time last year (July 11, 2011) that I first learned about this particular type of weather phenomenon.
My thoughts go out to all those who are still dealing with the aftereffects ... and, on another note, 173 days remain until the Mayan Apocalypse (not that the back to back derechos are a sign of an impending end of the world or anything ...)
THE LAND HURRICANE THAT DID SO MUCH DAMAGE THIS PAST WEEKEND:

REALLY IT's DERECHO PLUS AN AMAZING HEAT WAVE:

NOW I'M GOING TO USE THIS WORD ALL THE TIME:
