Random Soapbox for Saturday 12/31/16

I don't mean to go off on a rave here, but ...

In response to all the 2016-shaming I've seen on the interwebs (which in turn seems to have resulted in some shaming of the 2016 shamers ['cause, you know, that's how the interwebs work]), I want to be sure to rave about the sixteen best things from *my* year -- and also because it's an annual tradition for me (this is the seventh! list).

Consistent with the way things have been presented in the past, the list will be alphabetical and is as follows:

1.)  BIKING:  I'm on a long term weight loss journey, and after my attempts at jogging in 2015 led to a knee doctor telling me I was going to have to lose weight some other way before my knees would permit me to lose weight by jogging, I ended up back on a bike for exercise -- a place I hadn't been since I was regularly on a bike for actual transportation before I had a car back in the early 90's.  I am happy to report that the time away didn't matter, as that whole "it's like riding a bike" thing is actually spot on.

2.)  BOOK SALE:  Guess who found a local annual "friends of the library" book sale, where hardcovers are only $1 (and it's buy 4, get 1 free) and paperbacks are only a quarter?  Guess who's going to need a new bookshelf before too long?  (The answer is "me" ... to both questions.)

3.)  CASANOVA and OZZIE:  It was the third year raising two rescued pit bulls (one with allergies and the other with anxiety [and only 3 legs and a "wing" ... but that doesn't really stop him from doing much of anything]).  I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure it's the reason "work from home" was invented.

4.)  CHERRY CHERRY WHISKEY SOUR:  When I was young, I was a proficient bar crawler.  Now that I'm not as young, it's more likely that the drinks will happen at home once a week or so -- and the specific drink of the night is going to be a cherry whiskey sour with a splash of cherry juice and two to three cherries.  You know what?  It's a lot less expensive, too!

5.)  ELECTION SEASON:  Admittedly, it was a bit unpresidented all around (and it looks like it's going to stay that way for some time).  Things could get serious really quickly in the new year, but until the nuclear war starts, I'll stand by my statement that it sure was fun to watch it all come together/fall apart.  Plus I now live in a contested state, so although all votes matter, it felt like mine might have mattered a little more than all those years living in Chicago.

6.)  FIFTY TASTES OF FLORIDA:  I've been doing this writing thing for so long now that every now and then, I have to change it up just for the heck of it ... and this year, that meant that the "Random Thought for Thursday" became a "Random Taste for Thursday" instead, with one new eating establishment to review each week of the year.  Having completed all fifty meals, I have to say we had a blast (and we will continue in 2017 with fifty more new places to eat).

7.)  ICE CUBE TRAYS: Sometimes it' s the simple things -- and the ice cube trays needed to be replaced this year.  The first attempts were too cheap -- and snapped into pieces the first time I tried to break out the cubes.  But that second set, though:  perfect cubes, every time.  There were *other* good things that happened this past year, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit as to how happy they make me feel.

8.)  JOHN GUARE:  My acting "career", such as it was, started my freshperson semester of college with a role in 'House of Blue Leaves'.  Thanks to a presentation at a local university here in Florida, I got to meet the playwright AND he graciously signed my cast poster.  Good things come to those who wait ... and to those who hang on to their college stuff twenty seven years and counting.

9.)  MATTHEW, THE HURRICANE:  Three years I've been a Floridian -- and the storm named Matt was the closest I came to getting to experience an actual hurricane EXCEPT I was out of town when it showed up and EXCEPT it decided to skip our part of Florida for landfall further up north anyway.

10.)  MOVIE WEEKENDS:  I've previously disclosed that "my name is Troy ... and I'm a television addict", but this year I took it up a notch and devoted some of that tv time to movies (almost always at home curled up on the couch with the puppies) with #superherosaturdays and #stephenkingsundays.  I'm a man on a mission ... and I've made tremendous progress.

11.)  MULCH:  I may also be addicted to mulch.  To be fair, the back yard can't have dirt patches in it because of Casanova's allergies ... and the three attempts at sod (in ever smaller amounts) all failed.  So if I get my jollies on the weekends getting four bags and spreading it around over and over again again ... so what?

12.)  MURDER, THE CAT:  She was the only one who lived in PA, Chicago AND Ft Lauderdale -- which is what happens when you live a good long seventeen years or so.  This year, she passed, and although that's sad, the best part is of all the memories we have of her ... 'cause that way she lives forever.

13.)  OCTOBER TRAVELS:  In a car, up the coast, through Greenville and Charlotte in the Carolinas plus Blacksbug and then into western PA, across the center of the state down to my alma mater and back down the coast through DC and Chapel Hill and Jacksonville.  All in all, it was eight states in eight days (or more like 16 states since I was in almost all the states more than once) and the itinerary wasn't as important as all the people I got to see along the way.  If I missed you this time, I 'll be back in Sep 2018 (mark your calendars now) ...

14.)  SIGNING A 2 YEAR LEASE:  Little did we know that negotiating when we re-signed in March would pay off ... when the landlord's father put the house up for sale in the last few months of the year.  Although an offer came in, when you factored in our timeline and the amount of money we needed to buy out the lease, the offer was pulled and the house is no longer for sale.  Some decisions pay off dividends in ways you couldn't predict.

15.)  WALT/DOLLY:  Sometimes, vacation comes to you.  At least, that's how we feel when Walt and Dolly come for their annual stay in the winter.  We're all getting older, so we don't have quite as many activities as when they used to come to visit us in Chicago, but it's still a chance to go to the fair ... or to go out to eat a few times ... or to just stay home and play cards.  Plus, as tradition dictates, it always includes my annual birthday dinner at a steakhouse ... so there's that.

16.)  YOU:  It takes this honorary position every year at the end of my best of list (I'm not sure what's going to happen if I ever have a best something or other that starts with a Z), and that's for a specific reason.  Whether I managed to actually see YOU this year in my travels, or whether I just followed along with what YOU do on the Facebook, rest assured that my life is better because YOU are in it.  If ever there was a time to remember that YOU and I are in this together, it's now.  Thank YOU for being YOU -- and here's to YOU (and me) having the best new year ahead!

Random Soapbox for Saturday 12/24/16

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... all I want for this darn Christmas is less shaming and more inclusivity.  That can't be too much of a surprise, seeing as how I've been concerned about the rise of the fear of "the other" across the land.

The latest example chapping my hide comes from the local Publix.  Mind you, I'm still awfully fond of the grocery store and it is still my go-to stop for shopping in the area.  I've even found a way to get past their over-reliance on the privacy screens on the periodicals by taking them off the covers with the cleavage showing and moving them over to the ones with the "president"-elect on them.

The reason for my disappointment was in the produce aisle, when I was taken aback by the separation and labeling of certain tomatoes as "uglyripe" ones.  I paused to gather my thoughts, and then spoke to each one, looking it directly in the stem, and repeating a mantra to them about how they were each pretty exactly as they were, and how I wanted them to consider themselves "beautifulripe" tomatoes henceforth.

One day we'll live in a world where all will be accepted for what they have to contribute ... one day there will be no such thing as tomato-shaming ... ONE day ...

Random Soapbox for Saturday 12/17/16

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... someone is trying to erase my past, one fire at a time.

After finding out that my childhood home (from years fifth to twelfth grade) at 523 E Cumberland St in Lebanon PA burned down completely a year or so ago (I took pictures of the empty lot when I was home in October) ... and *then* that the McD East where I had my first main job was likely totaled in a blaze just a few months ago ... now comes news that the house next to Big Bertha's at 343 Walnut St in town has been hit by a fire as well (thanks for sharing Kristi HB).

Clearly, everything is not about me ... and so my first thought is for the 11 people displaced by the event.  My second though, though, is that, having lived there from 1997-98 with DJ, Corey and Selman ... and then later with Darryl L .,, I'm not quite sure how they got 11 people in that building comfortably.

My third thought though FOR SURE is that I'm worried that 705 Greentree Village might be the next "target".  And my fourth thought is that if I weren't almost 1200 miles away, I'd start thinking that maybe I had some kind of dissociative disorder and I was "acting out" like those characters in the 80's soap operas did (when it was called multiple personality disorder).

Stay safe out there those of you affiliated with my past.  There's apparently firebug on the loose!

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... it looks like my new neighbors next door decided to decorate for the holidays -- but they chose they rong colors.  This display is clearly orange and black, and I *know* that's going to make the whole 'hood feel like Halloween.

I'm debating whether it's appropriate for the first time I meet them to be as I inform them that they really should have chosen a red and green tent -- or a blue and silver one if they are Jewish.  Of course, I also can't exactly find their front door with the way they did things.

(On a more serious note, understanding that this is all about some pretty powerful poison, does anyone know if it's safe to breathe?  And whether termites are capable of moving the six feet or so of distance that separates their domicile from ours at the shortest distance?  And if I should be expecting to see glow in the dark three headed lizards in a few weeks?)

Regardless, from my new neighbors to you and yours:  Merry Christmasween!

Random Soapbox for Saturday 12/3/16

I don't mean to go off on a rave here, but ...

... that's *exactly* what I'm going to do.

This is going to count for my one Saturday out of the month like I normally do ... AND it's going to finish off what I've been doing for the whole month of November.

Over on the Facebook, I posted daily ... and on the past few Saturdays, I compiled my thoughts for the week so that they are recorded for the blog -- because my heart may be small, but it can hold a large amount of gratitude.  To whit:

NOV 27 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for SUPERHEROES ... lookit -- my love for all things Bat is pretty well documented (the front room/enclosed porch is practically my bat cave), but I've been spending Saturdays afternoons for a while catching up on all the other movies, including being exposed to the Marvel world (both Avengers and Xpeople), and there's just something about that little bit of escapism at the end of the week that provides a perfect respite from the real world and even offers a little bit of hope that everything is possible when we unite and focus all of our talents on evil when it shows itself.

NOV 28 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for THE RAIN ... even if it feels like a bit of a double whammy to have it rain on a Monday morning. Karen Carpenter be darned, it's not going to get ME down ... 'cause it makes the flowers grow (and 'cause the sun will come out as soon as this band off the ocean flies through, or so says the radar).

NOV 29 --  Today, I am THANKFUL for THE FACEBOOK ... because even though it can be dangerous and can cause a few meltdowns and may not be suggested for everyone (especially nowadays), once you get past all of that (assuming you *can* get past all of that), it's a great way to stay connected with all the characters out there from all the different chapters of my life. So even though I may not like or comment on everything, just know that I'm watching ... and thinking of you and your own story arcs.

NOV 30 -- Today, on the last day of the month and in the final post this kind of way until *next* November, I am THANKFUL for FAMILY ... and seeing as how my biological ones are scattered across the country (you'd have thought WE were the ones who built the tower of Babel and God punished with how far apart we all are), this post also has to cover my logical ones -- the people who have loved and supported and filled in for the others ... and that goes double for the family that lives with me (whether two, three or four legged)!

Random Soapbox for Saturday 11/26/16

I don't mean to go off on a rave here, but ...

... that's *exactly* what I'm going to do.

And not just for one Saturday out of the month like I normally do to balance out all the other weeks when I rant, but seeing as how it is November and all, I'm going to rave every week of the month in order to honor this season of gratitude.

Over on the Facebook, I'm doing it daily ... and on Saturdays, I'll compile my thoughts for the week so that they are recorded for the blog -- because I'm just following that impulse to express that feeling of kindness received.  To whit:

NOV 20 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for SPARKLING GRAPE JUICE ... 'cause it reminds of holidays past shared with JoAnn (my surrogate grandmother) back in the day. She may not be around for current celebrations, but a glass will be drunk in her honor at holidays meals this season. First up ... tonight's early Thanksgiving feast.

NOV 21 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for THE SUN .. it was 57 degrees on my morning walk. *57*! I was promised that I'd never see anything with a 5 in front of it down here. I managed two blocks before I had to don the wifebeater that I carry with me on my walks. Thanks goodness the sun came out!

NOV 22 --  Today, I am THANKFUL for BEING SIMPLE ... and I don't mean that in any pejorative way ... just that I'm glad I never wanted to join the rats in the race, or to be typed A or B or C or whatever ... that I can just enjoy moments as they happen and make my own happiness and appreciate that which I have. Of course, I will admit to being simple in the most complicated of ways ('cause I do love me a paradox), but when it all boils down -- it's the simple life for me!

NOV 23 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for SLURPEES AT THE 7-11 ... specifically the kind I mix to be 2/3 coca cola and 1/3 wild cherry and specifically the one I got today because I was a good boy and sat still in the chair whilst getting my hairs cut ('cause good boys get treats).

NOV 24 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for YOU ... because if we're connected on the Facebook, that means that at some point in the past, we were actually connected in the real world (hopefully you still remember what that is) for some period of time -- and I wouldn't be where I am and who I am were it not for the people I've met along the way. And I like where I am and who I am ... so I have you all to thank.

NOV 25 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for PEARL JAM RADIO ... 'cause that means I always have something to listen to in the car (specially seeing as how that Billy Joel channel only lasted for a short time.) Channel 22 on your Sirius XM dial!

NOV 26 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for OHIO STATE ... 'cause courtesy of their win today and our victory against them earlier this year, WE ARE ... Big 10 East Division Champions! Feels good! Bring on next week's game!

Over on the Facebook, I'm doing it daily ... and on Saturdays, I'll compile my thoughts for the week so that they are recorded for the blog -- because thankful people are happy people.  To whit:

NOV 13 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for CHRIS HARDWICK ... mind you -- I'm old enough to know him from when he got sexually harassed by Jenny McCarthy on a daily basis on the MTV ... but now that he's all grown up and leading the discussions after horrendous Walking Dead episodes of late, he's helping America deal with loss and uncertain times and the fear of hateful people in charge of crazy weapons. Come to think of it, why didn't they give him a Talking Election special?

NOV 14 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for CHRISTMAS LIGHTS IN FLORIDA ... and especially for the three houses all lit up I saw tonight running an after work errand (now "after work" is in the dark, since it's after the daylight savings changes). Not everyone decorates down here ... and some people just put a string of white lights up a palm tree and call it a day ... so I will admit that seeing a few places all bright and colorful made me smile.

NOV 15 --  Today, I am THANKFUL for ELECTRICITY ... because around here, it can come and go at FPL's whim. They finally permanently fixed the suicidal squirrels problem from a month ago that was causing multiple outages each week on just our block ... and today a little rain storm took the power out for some 2000 people for an hour or two. But it's back on now, and so, especially during this time of year, it's better to appreciate that fact than dwell on the other times ...

NOV 16 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for PAINKILLERS ... with a trip to the dentist scheduled for tomorrow, the toothache decided to amp itself up a day early. And I was going to be thankful for Aleve for its magical powers, and then I found the oxycodone-acetaminophen in the medicine cabinet ... so now I'm really really thankful (and slightly loopier than usual).

NOV 17 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for PUBLIX ... because after a trip there this evening, *almost* everything needed for two of three Thanksgiving meals (more to come on that) is purchased and in the freezer and the fridge and the pantry -- everything except the Patti Labelle Sweet Potato Pie, which is apparently only available at the WalMart.

NOV 18 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for FRIDAYS ... because I haven't worked on Saturdays or Sundays for years now, and so when they come around, it is indeed the weekend! And who doesn't like the weekend (except maybe those who have to work it)?!

NOV 19 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for A MIND THAT NEVER FORGETS ... because buildings may burn ... but memories are forever -- especially after they get up on the Facebook (which will be on Monday). Last night, the McDonald's in my hometown (where I worked when I was a young 'un) burned down. Today, I returned from my morning walk and jotted down 60+ memories from that time. They'll be presented on my blog in two days for Memorial Monday, 'cause that's what I do.

And not just for one Saturday out of the month like I normally do to balance out all the other weeks when I rant, but seeing as how it is November and all, I'm going to rave every week of the month in order to honor this season of gratitude.

Over on the Facebook, I'm doing it daily ... and on Saturdays, I'll compile my thoughts for the week so that they are recorded for the blog -- so as to cultivate the habit of being grateful.  To whit:

NOV 6 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for GAZEBO ROOM salad dressing. I first learned of it after the move to Harrisburg to finish law school, when I made the mistake of liking it so much, I tried to drink the excess that was in my empty salad bowl (it's a little strong to take as a shot, in all the right ways). All day long, there's been a London broil marinating in the good stuff, which I brought back from central PA last month as we've not had it in the pantry for months. That travesty will be remedied shortly ... .

NOV 7 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for super smart ATM MACHINES. Back when I was younger, your only option was dispensed $20s and you could risk putting a check in an envelope and hope that the slot didn't eat it. Now you can withdraw any amount you want, and you can just deposit a stack of bills and the machine counts them for you. Fancy fancy ...

NOV 8 --  Today, I am THANKFUL for ADOBO GRILL in Chicago, 'cause chef's guac game improved exponentially after the employment there, where it was made tableside night after night as part of their shtick. I've not seen a packet of guacamole seasoning ever since ... and now it's Mex-authentic every time we eat it.

NOV 9 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for PASSION. Mind you, I'm a little afraid that it's going to subsume some people I know based on their statuses of the last 24 hours ... but I'm not going to knock someone who believes so strongly that they get a little crazy every now and then. Now here's hoping that same passion shows up again when something outlandish moves beyond the campaign promise stage to something a little more immediately actionable.

NOV 10 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for MULCH ... even if I might be addicted. Earlier, the last patch of what was intended to be grass was covered up with it -- because grass just won't grow back there and because one of the puppy dogs is allergic to the dirt (and unfortunately he loves to dig in it). So mulch it is. *Everywhere!*

NOV 11 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for VETERANS ... although as I discovered recently, the standard "thank you for your service" may not quite work any more. As I said last week in the link below: "Maybe there are no words. Maybe words are hollow. Maybe actions are better -- volunteer, donate to a worthy veteran cause, or don't speak and just listen."

NOV 12 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for TEAMS ON A WINNING STREAK ... as in Penn State, of course. Mind you, I did not go to school there ... and I've only ever been to an actual game once in my life ... but since leaving my home state of PA in 2001, it's been a way to combat homesickness to follow their seasons (both good and bad). And it's always more fun to do that when they are winning six in a row!

I don't mean to go off on a rave here, but ...

... that's *exactly* what I'm going to do.

And not just for one Saturday out of the month like I normally do to balance out all the other weeks when I rant, but seeing as how it is November and all, I'm going to rave every week for the next five in order to honor this season of gratitude.

Over on the Facebook, I'm doing it daily ... and on Saturdays, I'll compile my thoughts for the week so that they are recorded for the blog -- in case I ever have a day where I feel like complaining, and then I can pull up my list and remember to appreciate what I have.  To whit:

NOV 1 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for CROSSING GUARDS. Now that I'm walking in the morning *before* work (and biking on my lunch break [so long as I don't have a flat tire]), I'm on the same schedule as the school kids, which means I get assistance getting through the big intersections. And they smile and say hello and good morning to me just like I'm back in school. Here's to the happy people keeping the world a little safer.

NOV 2 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for the CUBS. For the dozen or so years lived in Chicago, half of them were spent a spit and a holler away from Wrigley. As such, I know full well what is happening in my former hometown tonight. And talk about hanging in there and perpetrating a comeback -- inspiration for us all!

NOV 3 --  Today, I am THANKFUL for the neighbor's BOUGAINVILLEA, 'cause it adds a pop of color in the corner of the yard, where it has grown over the fence and into our space. But I'm okay with that, because otherwise the yard is a bunch of green and brown -- perfectly fine for earth colors and all, but still. Mind you, if the butterfly bushes (one red, one blue) could keep their blooms for any length of time (the butterflies here are voracious eaters), then it would be a different story. Until that happens though, it's the neighbor's BOUGAINVILLEA or nothing!

NOV 4 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for a little FUNK music. Partly because it is so ironically named (nothing will get you *out* of a funk than a little bit of funk), partly because I love me a horn section, and partly because I was catching up on this season's SNLs and got to the one where Bruno Mars was the musical guest.

NOV 5 -- Today, I am THANKFUL for weekend MOVIE TIME. For awhile now, I've been doing superhero movies on Saturdays ... and for a shorter amount of time, Stephen King movies/miniseries on Sundays. The movies/miniseries are great in their own right, but it's the cuddling up on the couch with the lights out, the volume cranked up to 50 and both puppies snuggled in on either side that makes the activity the best.

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... that little brat in the car commercial who insists on kicking the seat in front of her while her dad just smiles as he drives because he invested in lumbar support for his vehicle needs to be beat.

Ok, maybe "beat" is a strong word, but for reals, she needs to be disciplined.  That is unacceptable behavior.  And hey, I am ALL for expression ... but I am also ALL for raising our next generation to respect the personal space of others.

That being said, if that father was like that mother in the other ad who pretends not to know where her purse is just to make her child run up and down the stairs and all around the house because she wants her progeny to be skinny ... well then that seat kicking child gets a free pass to continue to do so -- as punishment for that lying deceitful parent (because it goes both ways).

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... there's nothing so vile as an internet troll.

Mind you, I don't mind a robust give-and-take conversation about issues, with reasoned arguments presented tactfully and respectfully.  I get that there's an aspect of social media for which that works just fine.

What I don't like so much?  Someone who readily admits that his goal is to take to the interwebs to wreak havoc and to sow the seeds of mayhem and to go out of his way to just represent *that* person on social media who takes an impish, sh!t-stirring, trouble-making approach to all things Facebook.

To put this in perspective, I may have recently posted something about how sexual assault victims may take years to come forward, and I may have connected the Trump scandal to the Cosby scandal to the Sandusky scandal ('cause that's how I roll), and a friend of mine may have shared my post, and a friend of *hers* may have added a comment ... which may have led me to investigate said commenter's profile, which may have led to me discovering this public facing status update (with names and photos removed, of course, 'cause I'm not looking to start a social media war).

In the end, I chose not to react.  Well, kind of.  After all, I am turning the experience into a post for today.  Here's the bottom line ... I'm almost certain that they did a study and confirmed that the vast majority of internet trolls are men and that they have micro-penises, seeing as how if their appendages were any bigger, they'd be otherwise occupied and too busy to go looking to cause trouble just for the sake of causing trouble.

There you go ... my take on internet trolls.  Beware them ... and beware them getting on my radar.

Random Soapbox for Saturday 10/8/16

I don't mean to go of on a rant here, but ..

... after spending so much time in the car this past vacation season, I just have to make sure I can go on record stating that "the closer you get, the slower I drive".

Lookit, I believe in the power of the cruise control.  I religiously set it seven miles above the speed limit (in hopes that that is the sweet spot to confuse a police professional who might clock my trajectory as I go barreling down the highway just enough to let me pass for violating the law by only about 10% or so).  If I am in the left lane and "in your way", it's not because I have some vendetta about ruining your day -- it's because there are cars in front of me in my lane.  And those are THE SAME CARS that you'll be behind, were I to slide over a lane just to let you pass.  As such, I'm going to save you the misery of leapfrogging MY spot in the endless parade ... and make sure that you stay right there behind me.

Now if your reaction to that is to basically threaten me by reducing the amount of space between my back bumper and your front fender so that it looks to me like you are now in my back seat, rest assured that I'm going to slow down -- not in any slam-on-my-breaks-and-risk-a-car-crash kind of way, but in a I'm-suddenly-going-to-go-slower-and-look-out-my-window-at-the-nature-going-by manner.

And if YOU don't like that, then YOU can be the one to risk YOUR life and limb by driving all around the other lanes to attempt to advance your position in the traffic.

I will not be left lane bullied.  You are on notice.

Random Soapbox for Saturday 10/1/16

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... I'm about to spend a LOT of time on the road, what with it being vacation, and what with me driving up the coast to central PA and back down to the tip of Florida where I call home (8 states in 8 days!) ... and with that many hours in the car, I'm going to need everyone to agree to obey the laws of the road.  That goes double for Floridians, who are abusing the right on red rules left and right (so to speak) -- seeing as how that's the single state in which I'll be spending the most hours in an automobile.

I am sick and tired of being on the right lane of a two lane road at a red light and watching a car come up beside me in the left lane, pause briefly and then decide that it could go right on red directly in front of me.  When I see green, my foot hits the gas, and I shouldn't have to worry about checking to see if the idiot next to me plans to cut me off because they are late to their next drug deal.

Not quite as dangerous, but just as wrong, is what I've seen lately on my daily walks, with a car at a similar intersection of two four lane roads that drives up in the right lane, fakes a turn on right, and then drives across all four lanes on the opposite road to continue going straight on the street where they should have been stopped at the red light in the first place.

Right on red is a right only granted widely in my lifetime (ostensibly because it was to help save gas during the shortage in the seventies) ... and if y'all keep on abusing it, they're going to take it away.  And if they do, then I'll say on that day -- THAT is why we can't have nice things, Florida!

Wish me luck (trip starts Tuesday)!

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... NO, Facebook, NO!

I get that you are all proud of being so ubiquitous and so smart that you go out of your way to "help"my user experience.

I get that you know that I happen to enjoy me some Penn State football games, and that you encouraged me at some point to actually tell you that I follow the team.

But a boy has to run errands sometimes, and that means that he may have to leave at halftime and go pick up some groceries, and so he uses the modern technology of the DVR to save the game to watch at soon as he gets back from said errands.

Which means that, after signing on to the Facebook to wish some happy birthday greetings during the time delayed viewing of that game, THAT BOY DID NOT want to see the final score over on the right hand side of his screen.  (In case you don't get it ... THAT BOY was me.)

Facebook, I consider that a spoiler alert FOUL ... for which you deserve a PENALTY.

I don't mean to go off on a rave here, but ...

[... look at me, raving TWICE in one month (when normally I only rave once and rant the rest of the time) ...]

... the third annual BATMAN DAY kind of snuck up on me, and I can't NOT comment on it in a positive way.

So three cheers to the Batman!

As you may know, I have a small "Batcave" where I display my collection of all things Bat gathered through the years (really it's just a section of the enclosed porch that doubles as a library ... but in my mind, it's my Batcave).  I grew up on the classic TV show in reruns, and I really came of age during the first movie franchise from the late 80's/early 90's.

There's something aspirational about the superhero without superhero powers -- although being able to fund the development of all the Bat-items that money can buy is pretty powerful in its own right.  I've also said before, and particularly with the old TV show, there's a comfort in knowing the guest villain of the week (no matter how challenging), because then you can focus your energies on the known evil ... as opposed to the situation where you don't know and have to assume that maybe *everyone* harbors a little evil (hey -- what can I say -- it's a twisted world and I have a twisted mind).

Let me go on record ... if (when?) the lottery gets won and the mansion plans get drawn up ... there may be an ACTUAL Batcave as a part of it (just sayin').

I don't mean to go off on a rave here, but ..

.. I will ... because I do that once a month on a Saturday (as opposed to a typical soapbox rant) ... in order to maintain a bit of balance in my life.

As you may have heard, over the recent holiday weekend, Hugh O'Brian passed away.  Mind you, that fact is not the "rave", obviously.  The rave is about what he stood for.  The rave is about his foundation.

The Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (or HOBY, for short) was an important part of my past for about a decade -- from the moment I represented my high school as a sophomore back in 1987 on through my years of volunteering until I was old enough to be a counselor ... and then work with the alumni ... and finally serve on the board ... until I could no longer honor my commitment to the organization (due to some personal issues in the mid-90's).

The people I met .. the experiences I had ... the places I traveled ... the youth I advised ... for that decade of my life, I was honored and privileged to be a small part of a greater cause -- a cause that existed because of the calling that Hugh felt after meeting the humanitarian Albert Schweitzer.

With this as a mission statement -- "To motivate and empower individuals to make a positive difference within our global society, through understanding and action, based on effective and compassionate leadership" -- the organization will continue to serve and empower despite the passing of its namesake, and those whom were touched by the seminars and activities will carry some of Hugh with them, passing on his beliefs to others, allowing him to achieve a bit of immortality.

Although I wasn't lucky enough to actually meet the man in the decade I participated in the foundation, he gifted me, through that seminar and the people in central PA who ran it, with an appreciation for critical thinking, an understanding of the value of "the other", and an awareness of positive self-esteem at a integral point in my own personal development.

What an amazing man ... and what an OUTSTANDING legacy.

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... there's something that people seem to forget about free speech.  I can't say it better than the article linked below did:  "Free speech is not unidirectional. It is omnidirectional. Everybody has it. So if you have an opinion, somebody else has a right to argue against your opinion."

So ... Colin K gets to silently protest the racist and homophobic cops in San Fran.  And some get to stand with him (as many veterans have done since this story blew up).  But it also means that some of you get to protest the fact that he's protesting (although I still encourage everyone to do some research and to fully understand the situation before giving a knee jerk reaction, because I've seen way too many of those comments that are all jerk and no knee).

What with the fact that free speech goes ALL ways -- except if you are in the crowded theatre yelling fire when there is none -- feel free to fall down the free speech rabbit hole, but remember that everyone gets to weigh in, and no one gets to be all right.

By the way ... I'm still not convinced that part of this isn't because Colin K let his hair go natural.  I thought white people stopped being afraid of afros back in the 70's, but I guess I'm naive.  Give him a buzz cut, oil him up and he lands on the cover of a magazine ... let his hair 'fro, put piggies on his socks and watch him take a knee, and he's a new national villain.

People of the world, everything is not black and white -- ironically, even black and white issues.  Welcome to grown up stuff, where people can stand (or kneel) for something and in the process, start a debate.  If you can't handle it, go watch golf instead (now that the black guy there isn't playing any more).

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... my new dentist best not be scamming me.

Here's the thing ... she and I started off on the wrong foot (or would that be "the wrong tooth") a year ago when I showed up in her office and asked for my twice annual cleaning, covered 100% by my insurance.

Her reply:  "Nope, sorry, you need a deep cleaning!" after which she wrote up a treatment plan that included time spent in each quadrant (because that way you can bill four times) and a wish list of crowns and things she'd like to put in my mouth, despite the fact that there's not a trace of royalty in my genealogy.

My reply back then:  "I'll call you when I'm ready to get started.".

Fast forward to this week (just about a year later), when I knew that I couldn't put it off any longer, as a lost filling was causing occasional sensitivity issues.  So off I went for another consult, and this time, in addition to the quadrant work, there's now a root canal or two which she's added to the crown plans.  And because she's rolled it up into the crowning activity, she's charging me 40% instead of the 10% I'm supposed to pay for root canals and fillings, as per my insurance.

Here's where it gets tricky.  I did two quadrants, and discovered that I was paying 20% of the cost out of pocket.  Problem is ... my insurance covers that task at 90%.  That means she's getting an extra 10% from me and, despite what's on the treatment plan sheets I sign, and extra 10% from my insurance.

I go back in two weeks to finish the other half of my mouth, and she'll get one chance to correct her billing mistake.  Otherwise, I think that's tantamount to fraud, and I think that's worth a call to whomever would care about that kind of office-keeping.

One last thought -- she will be in my mouth with very pointy objects, so I'll probably wait until AFTER the completion of the deep cleaning to bring up this discussion point.  Seems safer, don't you think?  (to be continued ...)

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... let's hold off on all the Lochte bashing until all the truth comes out.

That statement aside, do I think that he is likely more than eligible for a gold medal in jack-douchery?  Yes.

Do I think it's the most scandalous thing ever to happen at an Olympics?  No.

Is it wrong to get drunk and to vandalize a gas station bathroom and then to create an exaggerated story to cover it up?  Yes.

Have I been in gas station bathrooms where urinating on the wall might have actually made the only clean spot in the place?  Yes.

Is the truth about all of this likely somewhere in the middle?  Was there likely a gun pointed in the direction of the swimming boys?  Did those same young adults likely have to fork over money to cover whatever drunken damage they did?  Yes, yes, and yes.

Did anyone really expect anything better of Lochte?  I actually don't think so.

Here's why ... I watched the Ryan Seacrest produced show about Lochte a few years back.  At the time, he struck me as a bit of a simple childlike soul in an adult's body -- as the kind of frat bruh in a college town that likely gets drunk and urinates wherever he'd like ... whether in Rio or here in the USA.  The difference -- our celebrity obsessed culture would likely think it's "cute" and chalk it up to "bruhs will be bruhs" behavior ... and that would be that.

One could argue that there should be a higher standard for Olympians .. to which I would counter that that standard has to be adjusted for simpletons.  And if there is a punishment, it should fit the situation -- I haven't seen the details ... but I'm guessing that something akin to TPing a gas station bathroom, pissing somewhere other than the toilet, knocking a few things off the wall and engaging in urination sword fights (you know that's what boys do when they're drunk and go potty together) is something that doesn't necessarily rise to the level of national castigation that is currently underway.

Oh -- and do I hope he learned a lesson?  Hell JEAH!
