I don't mean to go of on a rant here, but ..
... after spending so much time in the car this past vacation season, I just have to make sure I can go on record stating that "the closer you get, the slower I drive".
Lookit, I believe in the power of the cruise control. I religiously set it seven miles above the speed limit (in hopes that that is the sweet spot to confuse a police professional who might clock my trajectory as I go barreling down the highway just enough to let me pass for violating the law by only about 10% or so). If I am in the left lane and "in your way", it's not because I have some vendetta about ruining your day -- it's because there are cars in front of me in my lane. And those are THE SAME CARS that you'll be behind, were I to slide over a lane just to let you pass. As such, I'm going to save you the misery of leapfrogging MY spot in the endless parade ... and make sure that you stay right there behind me.
Now if your reaction to that is to basically threaten me by reducing the amount of space between my back bumper and your front fender so that it looks to me like you are now in my back seat, rest assured that I'm going to slow down -- not in any slam-on-my-breaks-and-risk-a-car-crash kind of way, but in a I'm-suddenly-going-to-go-slower-and-look-out-my-window-at-the-nature-going-by manner.
And if YOU don't like that, then YOU can be the one to risk YOUR life and limb by driving all around the other lanes to attempt to advance your position in the traffic.
I will not be left lane bullied. You are on notice.
