For only the 10th time since I started this blog back in 2009 (!?!), I'm dusting off an (obviously) occasional series called "Country Music has the best ... lyrics ... ever".
Tonight's entry is so bold as to even call itself the "perfect country and western song" ... because it includes a bonus verse (and who doesn't love a bonus verse) that finds a way to feature trains, trucks, prison and gettin' drunk -- also known as the key ingredients for country songs.
Of course, I did have to go back to "classic" country ... when I was only three years old ... to find the David Allen Coe version of "You Never Even Called Me By Name". I was prompted to do so after hearing it on a recent Thursday (that's the day for the Music Choice Classic Country station when I'm here working from home) ... but listening back to it tonight, I realize that I hear a snippet of it any time that we're playing cards with Shirly P (darlin').
Be sure to stick around for the grand finale (and just try not to shout it out loud):
Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got runned over by a damned old train

Random Tune for Tuesday 11/24/15
Working from home as I do means I get to control the background music that gets played in "the office".
To provide a little variety, I mix it up with different xfinity music channels on different days, including "classic country" on Thursdays ... which is all the long way to explain how it was that I recently heard this tune from 1982, and I found myself singing along as I recognized it from my youth.
Of course, in my youth, I didn't fully understand that it was a song about the lady whose husband was overseas in the military and so she deflowered the narrator -- who was the boy delivering groceries. Years later, Mr. Yearwood (aka Garth) would have a hit with a similar theme (although his teenage boy was deflowered by a voracious farmer widow [see 'That Summer']) ... but TG Sheppard broached the subject first with this song.
Only in the world of story-song country music could you get away with not one, but TWO hits about the sexual exploitation of the male youth of America by cougars.
I CAN'T FIGHT THIS FIRE ALONE ... STAY WITH ME UNTIL IT'S GONE:

Random Tune for Tuesday 6/16/15
For just the eighth time since this whole thing started 2633 posts ago back in November 2009 (boy I've been doing this for awhile ...), I am celebrating a random tune on this Tuesday that fits into my oh so occasional series called "Country Music has the best ... lyrics ... ever". (One can click on that label on the right hand side listing on the blog to see the other seven selections IF one is so inclined.)
And almost as rare, I'm featuring a song that is brand new and just got released. I heard it on last week's CMT country music awards ... and I'll be damned if it's not pretty catchy and definitely pretty clever, specifically in the climax of the chorus ...
Never grow up, never grow old
Just another rebel in the great wide open on the boulevard of broken dreams
And I learned everything I needed to know from John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16
A SONG ABOUT JOHNS (NOT THE PROSTITUTE KIND):

Random Tune for Tuesday 6/4/13
One more country song and then I'll diversify my tunes (I think it's "randomly" been country now since the beginning of May).
And this one (which I heard for the FIRST time on a classic country station on my trip last month) is a perfect fit to also join my very occasional series called "Country Music has the best ... lyrics ...ever".
Maybe it's just that I found that I could relate to that which I was hearing in my advanced age and waist size -- especially the chorus that says ... "Don't call me on the phone ... just ring my dinner bell".
Classic country, indeed ... emphasis on the word "classic"!
OOH ... BRRRR .. .MOMMA ... HE'S A DOUBLE XL:

Random Tune for Tuesday 3/12/13
So, in an odd way, this is a companion post to the Random Tune for Tuesday of 10/5/10.
On that day, I meant to declare this song as my random tune of the day, but couldn't find a youtube version of it.
So, back then, I posted the song that I was planning on posting today, until I did some quick research on the blog (gotta love the power of the google search embedded in a blog), and I discovered the 10/5/10 post.
Which, in turn, made me search the youtube -- where I actually found the song I wanted to post back on 10/5/10.
So if you want to count the flowers on the wall and play solitaire 'til dawn with a deck of 51, you'll have to find the 10/5/10 post on my blog (search "solitaire" to find it). Because today, it's whatever bangs your shutter, melts your butter, pops your corn, blows your horn, peels your banana, plays your piano, mows your lawn, lights your candle, turns your handle, fries your chicken, cocks your pistol, toots your whistle, sails your boat, gets your goat, plows your garden, begs your pardon, bakes your bread, slays your dragon, paints your wagon and shows your stuff! They don't make songs like this anymore!

Random Tune for Tuesday 2/19/13
I think I heard this song again on the drive to or from Indianapolis for the Super-Bowl-weekend-one-year-late getaway (New Orleans -- here's to visiting you for the first time in Feb 2014!) ... and it made me recall that I have this ever-so-occasional series on this blog entitled "Country Music has the best ... lyrics ... ever". (Plus -- that was the weekend that I broke my January beer-fast, so it was a fitting song on which to stumble.)
So -- why not add this to that ... a little "basic honky tonk anatomy ...
The drinkin' bone's connected to the party bone.
The party bone's connected to the stayin' out all night long.
And she won't think it's funny and I'll wind up all alone.
And the lonely bone's connected to the ... drinkin' bone!"
Cheers! Prosit! Salut! Bottoms up! Imeqatigiita*!
*The interwebs say that's relevant to Greenland. I'm barely fighting the urge to make it tomorrow's wordplay for Wednesday!

Random Tune for Tuesday 7/10/12
This tune actually popped into my head during the long drive home from my trip to PA in mid June ... but I remembered it again when I was viewing the PBS Special "Marvin Hamlisch presents: The Way We Were: Songs of the Seventies" ...
[PAUSE: Upon reflection on that last sentence that I wrote, I'm not sure if there is anything else I could type that would better encapsulate the subtext of ... I am old.]
... as Ray Stevens was on that pledge special singing his before-its-time Gaga-esque hit "Everything is Beautiful". This is not that song ... but it does have this stellar second verse:
Well, Harv hit the aisles dancin' and screamin'
Some thought he had religion others thought he had a demon
And Harv thought he had a weed eater loose in his Fruit-Of-The-Looms
He fell to his knees to plead and beg and the squirrel ran out of his britches leg
Unobserved to the other side of the room
All the way down to the amen pew where sat Sister Bertha better-than-you
Who'd been watchin' all the commotion with sadistic glee
But you should've seen the look in her eyes
When that squirrel jumped her garters and crossed her thighs
She jumped to her feet and said "Lord have mercy on me"
As the squirrel made laps inside her dress
She began to cry and then to confess to sins that would make a sailor blush with shame
She told of gossip and church dissension but the thing that got the most attention
Was when she talked about her love life and then she started naming names
Nowhere else but country music can this kind of song go down!

[I'm dusting off an old series ... Country Music has the best ... lyrics ... ever ... to add an entry to it tonight.]
Regardless of where you fall on the "did he bully the Dixie Chicks continuum", I just can't compete with this type of poetry (and I dare you to listen to it and not have it stick in your head) ...
Now a red solo cup is the best receptacle
For barbecues tailgates fairs and festivals
And you sir do not have a pair of testicles
If you prefer drinking from glass
A red solo cup is cheap and disposable
And in 14 years they are decomposable
And unlike my home they are not foreclosable
Freddie-Mac can kiss my ass woo
Red solo cup I fill you up
Lets have a party lets have a party
I love you red solo cup I lift you up
Proceed to party proceed to party
But I have to admit the ladies get smitten
Admiring how sharply my first name is written
On you with a sharpie when I get to hittin'
on them to help me get lucky
PROCEED TO PARTY:

Random Tune for Tuesday 10/26/10
This could be the very definition of random (and certainly belongs in the occasional series Country Music has the best ... lyrics ... ever!) -- a song that appears out of nowhere in my head every so often (especially depending on what I did the night before). And, with a little research, it looks like it might all trace back to a country version that was on the charts in 1981 (when I was nine!)? Below is the link to the Rovers singing about how ... "Could've been the whiskey. Might've been the gin. Could've been the three or four six-packs, I don't know, but look at the mess I'm in! My head is like a football. I think I'm going to die! Tell me, me oh, me oh my -- Wasn't that a party!"

Random Tune for Tuesday 6/1/10
What with IDOL over for the season, I offer up another in my occasional series of "country music has the best ... lyrics ...ever". In particular, use the link below to see the official video of Jaron's song "Pray for You". Short story -- boy goes to church in the verse and learns how it is important to pray for those who have done you wrong, and gets into the spirit of it all by the chorus: "I pray your brakes go out running down a hill, I pray a flower pot falls from a window sill and knocks you in the head like I’d like to. I pray your birthday comes and nobody calls, I pray you're flying high when your engine stalls. I pray all your dreams never come true. Just know wherever you are, honey, I pray for you."
