What southern Florida is talking about this week:

Christmas!

Well, actually, what with the large Jewish population down here, it's also safe to say that there is a southern Florida contingent of size talking about Hanukkah instead.

Regardless, to those of you who celebrate, and for those of you who participate in Christmas-adjacent activities, may your days be merry and bright ... and the last line of that song will have to be omitted because it has no meaning down here *other* than a racist one.

In all seriousness, though, from all of us to all of you (plural), here's hoping the festivities didn't drive you to therapy as those shown in the image ... and that your day was spent with loved ones or with the memories of loved ones ... 'til the season comes 'round again.

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

... the finalists for whom should be chosen to represent Florida in the national statuary hall of the Capitol building now that General Kirby (he of the losing side of the Civil War) is being replaced to avoid slavery and other racist bad juju.

NOT among the finalists -- Tim Tebow.  (You young kids can google him ... he used to play football and is kind of known for insisting that God was watching *his* games every week.)  There's a whole list of other NOs, including the intangible of Jeb Bush's political career, Florida's own prolific in his craft Ted Bundy, Little Marco's Tiny [body part], the generic Florida Man and Statuey McStatueface (my favorite).  NOTE:  I am not trying to be clever.  Those were on the list.  Seriously.  It's Florida after all.  Some were taken off because the rules were that you had to be dead for ten years, and others because they weren't exactly offered up in good faith (although that Tebow fellow scored high in the public votes).

Instead, the top three, in reverse order from the number of votes they got, are an Everglades activist, the founder of Publix, and the woman featured in the image accompanying this post:  Mary McLeod Bethune.  If this leader in the civil rights movement who had a passion for education becomes the one the Florida government chooses "sometime" (the law requiring that the statue be replaced was conveniently passed without any deadline), she would be only the 10th woman out of 100 (each state has two statues) and she would be the FIRST African-American.

So yeah, maybe it's time?!

What southern Florida is talking about this week ...

... exactly how to mark the death of a certain dictator.

Now I know I posted about this exactly two weeks ago, but let me tell ya -- this story has legs down here what with the size of the Cuban community in this area.

It turns out that an ice cream parlor in Miami figured out the perfect new flavor to add to their shop ... called "Burn in Hell Fidel" ... which is the regular homemade chocolate mixed in with a healthy dose of cayenne (as in ... the fires of hell in which Fidel currently resides [allegedly]).

After a bit of research, I also found "Burn in Hell Fidel" hot sauce AND toilet paper with Fidel's face on them, in case that helps you understood the mood down here this holiday season.

I just have to say that all this creativity is making me rethink MY revenge plans for a certain group of people (currently urinating on their graves, but I may have to bump that up a notch now) ...

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

A divorce rate that is the lowest in 35 years!

In other news, both of my biological parents died this decade.  Now I'm not saying for sure that the two facts are related, but they did both collect them as a hobby, so ... you know.  If I owe America a "you're welcome" on their behalfs, then "you're welcome, America".

Of course, fewer people are getting married (silly silly millennials), so there's that.  And seeing as how statistics can be spun to say just about anything, it seems like "divorce rate" itself can be defined a bunch of different ways.

So take the news as you wish ... and don't let that new trend alone dissuade you from doing what you have to do ... (you know who you are) ...

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

The death of a certain old man with a great white beard.

Oops ... NOT Santa Claus, for those who read that and panicked, but a certain Fidel from Cuba.  Mind you, I was born long after the whole missile crisis, and until moving down here, HE was just a history lesson for me and Cuba was just a place so far away ('only in Miami', as Bette Midler used to sing).

Then came the move, and suddenly I became hyper-aware of the inter-relationship between this area and that area just 90 miles away from Key West.  So the fact that the Sunday paper was wrapped in a special 12 page section (seen here), or that the normal Sunday morning programming was preempted to cover the Cuban community in Miami banging on their pots and pans in celebration (note ... that's not a dig ... that's what actually happened) is no longer a surprise.

What comes next remains to be seen, but we in the US plan to keep Gloria Estefan and we'd like Elian Gonzalez to come back and our "President"elect would probably like to build a hotel there sometime soon ...

What southern Florida is talking about this week ..

Murder at Mills Pond Park!

No ... I'm not starting up the audience participation murder mysteries that I did in college in the 90's ... although the main character in my current creative project that I'm writing one post at a time (Lorem Ipsum) WILL find himself in Winston Falls in the New Year ... and he WILL interact with some people who survived those same stories.

Yes ... there WAS an actual murder and Mills Pond IS an actual park -- a park I visit frequently on my walks/bike rides and a park to which we take the puppies every so often.

This is a sign that greets parkgoers now, offering a $3000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the killer of a popular kids' football coach who was gunned down in front of his players after a practice had ended.  Of course, as more time has passed after the incident, it turns out that this particular football league, formed by Flo Rida, actually has a history that includes a sting for illegal gambling and the like -- making it seem like somebody might have owed somebody some money and couldn't pay up.

Remember when kids' sports was about the kids?  Yeah ... not so much down here ...

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

... election protests.

Yeah, I know, there's already even a backlash about that backlash ... but it hasn't even been a week yet, and the last I checked, there wasn't a time limit on the stages of grief (for that percentage of the public that is grieving).

Of course, gloaters gotta gloat, so there will be fuel for the fire for a bit longer (from that percentage that is gloating).  And the Facebook sure is burning!  I can't wait to see who's left standing when the racism has settled (oh who am I kidding ... that's not gonna happen any time soon).

Where do *I* stand?  I believe that people have the right to protest.  I'm not so much a fan of the looting.  I think that there are worse things ahead, though, and I think that the passion that I'm seeing best last until there's a specific action to protest (oh who am I kidding ... specific actions to protest).

And finally the explanation to this picture.  It's from Publix.  They have those privacy screens that they use for magazine cover content that might be objectionable.  Normally when I go through the line, I take them and hide them because they are often covering up a tiny bit of cleavage, and I make the executive decision that it's okay for the world to see boobies.  This weekend, when I went through the line, I decided that a privacy cover was the perfect thing to put in front of the People magazines for the week, which feature a photo of the Donald as "President".

Objectionable is in the eye of the beholder ...

Random Scandal Sheet for Sunday 11/6/16

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

... the upcoming election.

For the last few weeks, I've offered up my official endorsements for the statewide Senate race, the statewide amendments and the local county ballot propositions.  All that's left is the BIG one ...

I am now prepared to go on record that I'm voting for KASICH and O'MALLEY ... except they didn't survive the debate phase of the cycle (and, admittedly, as such, they didn't get the thorough vetting that the others did ... so maybe something might have come up to sway my mind).

All kidding aside, I've consistently said throughout this process that the participation rate in our elections is embarrassingly low, and that I just want people to actually vote, regardless of whom they choose.  For me, making the choice means deciding which of the candidates best addresses the biggest concerns of the individual choosing.  To whit, here are mine:

Most personally to me, I would like to stay employed.  Since my employer services international students (many of whom are Muslim) who have come to this country to take our medical licensing exams so that they can pursue a career as doctors in the US and seeing as how any short sighted shutting down of that process would result in a lack of business for my business -- and a potential loss of a job -- it can be no surprise that I'm officially now "with her".

Not wanting to be a one issue voter, the second factor in my decision is the fact that Pres 45 will have an outsized influence on the Supremes -- and I have a personal investment in some recent decisions that I do not want to see overturned plus I have the hardest time with "strict constructionists" who refuse to take into account over two hundred years of progress and who pretend that the founding fathers had the foresight to predict how modern times would need to be adjudicated.  As such, I am officially now "with her".

Then there are the nuclear codes.  They need to be with someone with a bit more temperamental stability.  Those two words joined together can ONLY apply to one of the candidates ... so indeed, I am officially "with her".

Plus the VPs.  Here's a prediction that I've said privately:  if he wins, I think there's a high likelihood that he will do something insta-impeachable or quit within the first 100 days.  If she wins, I think there's a high likelihood that she will be pursued relentlessly until someone finds something to drive her out of office.  So if you are one of those who has an issue between choosing the "lesser of two evils", then maybe make your decision based on the VP candidates.  His is too hateful and too old school and too angry-old-white-man for modern times.  In the VP vote, I'm also "with her" choice.

Ultimately though, I believe strongly that he cannot be rewarded for the extreme divisiveness he has introduced into the political process.  He cannot be rewarded for the destruction he has wrought unto the classic Republican party.  He cannot be rewarded for the hatred toward minorities and "the others" that he has served to amplify.  He cannot be rewarded for his casual approach to sexual assault.  He cannot be rewarded with the final prize for this "Presidential Apprentice" show that he created by bastardizing our democratic process.  For those reasons, I am "with her".

The fact that she is a she, and would be the first she to be president is icing on the cake -- a most fortunate side effect of my choice.  (And the fact that I can't stand any of his surrogates, and that they all seem like the kids who joined the debate team just because they like to hear themselves talk when they argue and that they lack all skills of logic is not officially a variable.  Although it IS true -- those surrogates are the worst.)

In the end, I am pleased to endorse Hilary Clinton for President.  I am "with her".

So sayeth the Troy.  Now make your decision after deciding what is most important to you ... and go out and VOTE on Tuesday!

Random Scandal Sheet for Sunday 10/30/16

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

... the upcoming election.

With so few days left, it's (potentially past) time for me to provide my endorsements.

For a total of four weeks (the past two, this one and next week), I'm going to go lay out those for whom you should vote (whether people or amendments) here in my state (in my humble opinion, of course).  Since I'm obviously saving the big national one for next week, it's time to address one that is only for this county.

And after careful consideration, I'm going to go on record saying that I support the county wide proposal to increase sales tax by a penny, half of which will go to the county and half of which will go to the local governments.

Mind you, I did not come to this decision lightly.  The story of this proposal and how hard it was to get it on the ballot and how much bickering happened prior to it being official almost turned me off.  The worry that the proposal is being presented without very firm and specific plans is a great one.  The fact that money is hard to come by so soon out of the Great Recession is truth.

But here's what changed my mind -- first, the sales tax affects everyone who spends money and is fair in the way that proportional taxes are.  You spend a little money -- you'll contribute a little more.  You spend a lot of money -- you'll contribute a lot more.  You can't get out of it by being too poor or too rich -- EVERYONE will be pitching in.

Additionally, I'm all for funding alternative ways of transportation.  On a personal level, if my half-pennies mean that I'll have safer bike paths, then I'm in.  If your half-pennies mean that you'll be able to get out and about without always having to be in your car (and stuck in increasing traffic), then you should be in.  The future has to start somewhere ... and I'm suggesting that it start with this tax increase.

Note one other bit of trickiness ... this is actually TWO proposals (each for a half penny) and BOTH must pass in order for the tax increase to happen.  As such, I'm really suggesting TWO yeses here.

So sayeth the Troy.  Come back next Sunday for my final piece of guidance ...

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

... the upcoming election.

With so few weeks left until the day of voting (not to mention how early voting has completely changed the election timeline dynamic), it's (potentially past) time for me to provide my endorsements.

For four weeks (last week, this week and for two more weeks), I'm going to go lay out those for whom you should vote (whether people or amendments) here in my state (in my humble opinion, of course).
And it's time to cover the amendments:

My recommendation is simple to remember -- NO to 1 and YES to the others ...

NO to 1, which is a very trickily worded amendment about solar energy that might make you think you're FOR it when you are actually AGAINST it if you vote YES.

YES to 2, which is the second attempt at getting medical marijuana passed in this state (after almost passing two years ago).

YES to 3, which would give a property tax exemption to first responders who are permanently disabled in the line of duty.

YES to 5, which would give special tax consideration to senior citizens who apply for a homestead exemption.

(There is no 4 ... because 4 was voted on in the August primaries ...)

As I learned two years ago, Florida has a special rule whereby amendments must get 60% to pass ... so we'll see where the numbers fall when it's all said and done.

So sayeth the Troy.  Come back next Sunday for more guidance ...

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

... the upcoming election.

With so few weeks left until the day of voting (not to mention how early voting has completely changed the election timeline dynamic), it's (potentially past) time for me to provide my endorsements.

For the next four weeks, I'm going to go lay out those for whom you should vote (whether people or amendments) here in my state (in my humble opinion, of course).  And I'm going to start with the obvious:  I am pleased to officially endorse Patrick Murphy for Florida Senator.

There are three reasons, and all of them come easily, and all of them are about why you shouldn't vote for his opponent:

1.)  His opponent promised that he wouldn't run.  Which was a lie.

2.)  His opponent didn't want the job when he had it.  Attendance records don't lie.

3.)  His opponent has small hands.  Or wait.  Maybe he doesn't.  Maybe he was just fascinated with the size of the *other* man's hands (not that there's anything wrong with that if that's where your interest lies).  Regardless ... debates don't lie.

All kidding aside, you should vote for Murphy because, as his own website touts, "Patrick Murphy is a problem solver who is focused on bringing Democrats and Republicans together, not dividing people."  In today's day and age, rare is the politician who *leads* with a "leadership = compromise" message.  These are the times that try our souls, and Patrick Murphy is the local Florida answer to how we will rise above the divisiveness and how we will get to experience much needed progress.

So sayeth the Troy.  Come back next Sunday for more guidance ...

What Lebanon is talking about this week:

The walk to school, some 30 years later.

I make it back home (to central PA -- my original home) every two years or so, and this most recent trip, I decided to start a new tradition:  I walked FROM the location featured in the first photo TO the location seen in the second photo ... and back again.

That was indeed the same walk to high school I did day after day, from 1985-1989 (give or take a few exceptions, of course).  The starting point *used* to be a house, but it burned down lat year.  All the same, that lot in the 500 block of East Cumberland (the very edge of the city school district boundary) was the beginning for the first leg of the journey, and I started by walking the way the stepmother said we *had* to -- straight down Cumberland and straight up 8th Ave ... but for the return trip, I cheated and took the shortcuts I took when I was younger ... down through (what was) the Daily News parking lot, on down Poplar Street, across (what was) Zweier's parking lot (there were a lot of parking lots on this path), down Walnut St past the mansion that you can now rent for weddings, through the Hebron Church parking lot and on through Hebron proper to come out at the alley across from what once was my home.

Now having completed the inaugural walk, I can't wait to see what will have changed when I take this same path again in years to come.

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

Matthew, the hurricane.

Truth be told, the cone keeps on moving out to sea, so although southern Florida is indeed talking about the storm, it may be that we'll be spared yet again (similar to how it was with Hermine, which went into the Gulf and then crossed Florida up north).

More truth be told, I'm leaving town ahead of the storm and will be up in central PA long before the potential hurricane comes close to where me and mine live (although the "mine" part of that equation will be in the area, so there's that concern).

Most truth be told, although I do so want to experience my first hurricane now that I'm a Floridian, I hope it doesn't happen when I'm not around to open up the can of bacon flavored spam that's on my hurricane supply shelf!  ('Cause ... priorities!)

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

... tomorrow night's debate.

Of course we are.  I mean we are a battleground state after all -- although I've learned that with current electoral college data crunching, it's actually a county by county game (and I'm not necessarily in a battleground county where me and mine sit in the state).

Some expect Super Bowl type numbers tomorrow night ... but I don't think the advertisements have risen to that level.  And let's face it -- there's a chance that it will be the ONLY debate of the season ... because we all know that if Trump gets unhappy, he'll likely find a way to pull out of debates two and three.

Only Trump and Clinton will be verbally sparring ... because the host site is in Aleppo and so Johnson got lost on the way.  (Just kidding ... it's in New York and is being multi-cast on many many channels ... and Johnson won't be there because he couldn't get to the 15% threshold, which means you know that Stein had absolutely no chance.)

There will be fireworks.  There will be slip-ups.  There will be insults.  There will be faces -- lots of faces.  And there will be commentary -- my own -- available exclusively on the Facebook.  Expect a bit of snark ... which is just something I use to make the truth a little more palatable.  Here's hoping our divided states of America won't have completely fallen apart by this time tomorrow night!

Now added to the list of things it may be too risky to do ... walking past NYC dumpsters and malling in Minnesota.

I know, I know ... change your behavior and the terrorists win (whether domestic, presidential or otherwise).  I also know that the continued desensitization to the violence makes it way too easy to have an initial response of "is *that* all you got?" once you hear about how there were injuries but no deaths in either case and how bombs didn't go off as planned in New York and New Jersey.

But still ... "give me a compound for me and my loved ones so that we can disconnect from a world gone mad" is sounding more and more like a survival plan ... ALSO, of course, thoughts are with all those victimized in these latest mini-attacks.

Random Scandal Sheet for Sunday 9/11/16

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

... the legacy of 9/11.

Fifteen years later, and the memories of that day haven't faded.

In many ways, it's a misnomer to only talk about the memories of "that day", seeing as how the experience of 9/11 was so much more than just seeing the planes crash into the towers, and the towers subsequently crash into New York City proper ... it was more than hearing of the other planes -- one hitting its target and another missing its intended mark courtesy of the gumption that underlies the best of the human spirit and that gilds the decisions regarding the sacrifices that heroes make.

It was so much more than the hours glued to the television in the week(s) after, as America communed over the coverage, devouring morsels of information as they became available -- all for the hope of understanding how hatred of "the other" could lead to senseless violence on a massive scale ... and all for naught, leaving individuals with the uncertain empty understanding that "senseless" means by very definition that it will never make sense.

It was so much more than walking out of a hotel in downtown Chicago after arriving on the night of the 10th of September of 2001 on a mission to find an apartment and a job -- only to find the evacuation of the Magnificent Mile for fear that Chitown was to be the next target.  It was so much more than pulling the family van over on the side of the road for a moment of silence a week later once the death toll numbers were known and the country collectively cried at the designated hour.  It was so much more than the wars that followed ... the death and destruction upon death and destruction that cycles out of control to this very day.

For that's just it.  The experience of 9/11 is ongoing.  There's a second wave of illnesses linked to the toxicity of ground zero.  There's a second generation now reaching the age of understanding with the losses now a part of the collective consciousness of America -- a grouping of individuals for whom there is no recollection of a world before 9/11.

And there's an urgency ... an urgency to remember those that gave their lives as part of the 9/11 experience and all that came after.  But a greater urgency to find some way to rally humanity to rise above the hatred in this world ... to shine the light of freedom to the heavens so that it reflects back and guides those struggling to find peace and love on this planet for all fellow humans.

With apologies to Paul the letter writer, it's an urgency to see hatred for what it is and to stop it in its tracks, for, as I stated six years ago in a similarly reflective mood:  "Hatred is not patient, hatred is not kind. It is consumed by envy, it frequently boasts, it is always proud. It is rude, self-seeking, easily angered and it forever keeps record of wrongs. Hatred delights in evil but shuns the truth. It always destroys, always betrays, always feeds on fears, and is always insidious. Hatred too often wins ... the worst of these is hatred."

The legacy of 9/11 is that each and every one of us is called into action to defeat hatred wherever it exists, including in our own hearts.  Won't you join me in the battle, this day in particular ... but also for all days.

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

The holiday weekend, of course.

Back in the day, I'd be getting ready to work my way through hours of the Jerry Lewis Telethon ( a moment of silence for that tradition taken from us all by corporate greed) ... but nowadays it's more about a trip to the beach and some lawn work (there will be mulch!), some drinking and grilling and a rare night out and about (I'm getting too old to do that too often, but hey -- I have off tomorrow)!

Of course, that AND being grateful that I'm one of the 159 million people who HAS a job (the US civilian labor force as of July 2016 and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Here's hoping you and yours have a safe and enjoyable weekend ... from me and mine!

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

Elections!

Not those ones in November that will be here soon enough, but the *primaries* that take place THIS Tuesday!

All eyes are on the Senate race.  Because it's a closed primary state, only registered Republicans can choose whether to send little Marco on to the general election and maybe back to Washington (for a small percentage of the time, assuming he didn't learn any lessons from his current run as part time senator), while registered Democrats choose between current house members Patrick Murphy or Alan Grayson to put up against little Marco in November.  (By the way, Rubio does still have an opponent, a Trumpish homebuilder named Carlos Beruff, but he's being pretty much ignored.)  My endorsements:  if you're red, vote BERUFF, if only just to honor the fact that Rubio said he didn't want the job back when he was competing in hand size contests with the Donald ... and if you're blue, vote MURPHY, if only to inject a little youthful attitude into our government.

Some eyes are also on a certain race pitting Debbie Wasserman Schulz against an opponent (Canova) in what is being portrayed as a Sanders/Clinton revenge match, what with all the democratic drama while she was heading up the DNC, a job she held until the Russians intervened with a well timed email hack.  Only registered Democrats in a certain area can participate in this battle (by voting ... a lot of people from all over have been spending money to influence the outcome, which is a bit frustrating), so if you fit those *voting* categories, my endorsement is for SCHULZ, because of her history of delivering for her constituents -- which is the job of a representative, after all.

One more item of interest (accompanying lots of local races all over the place) is an amendment that would promote solar energy by providing tax breaks to homes and businesses that install solar panels.  Some are concerned that this is a play for big businesses to avoid paying taxes that would help local communities, but the reality is that this is a very sunny place ... and that alternative energies need to be encouraged in order for there to be future survival (at least up until the rising ocean waters wipe out the state).  My endorsement:  vote YES on the amendment (which needs 60% to pass).

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

India's Independence Day.

Which, admittedly was this *past* Monday, so this post probably would have been better provided *last* Sunday.

And while I'm admitting things, I'll have to cop to the fact that my knowledge about India's freedom from Britain is somewhat limited to knowing the meaning of the word "raj" to play in Words with Friends ... and to whatever I learned from watching two seasons of Indian Summers on PBS before it (sadly) got cancelled.

But hey ... this melting pot down here isn't only for latins and haitians ... we celebrate *everyone*.  Except the event in town wasn't at midnight on the 14th going into the 15th, which, according to the interwebs, was a necessary compromise because Aug 15th of 1947 was an "unfortunate and unholy" date astrologically to the Indians ... but Aug 15th was a "lucky day" to the British Lord who was coordinating all the details.

And now you know ... so tell any Indians you meet to have a happy belated independence day.  Just, down here, make sure they aren't the Miccosukee or the Seminole kind of Indians ... 'cause they're the wrong kind and they only gained independence when they got to run the casinos.

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

... the same thing that you might be talking about yourself before the end of summer (unless you live in a plain white part of this map of the expected spread of the Zika virus).

Me and mine aren't under quarantine -- yet.  Right now, it's all about a trendy artistic neighborhood in Miami called Wynwood (and there's nothing more trendy than catching the latest bug) ... but the risk is expected to grow.

At the federal level, there are efforts underway to get some emergency funding (by raiding other budgets).  The most controversial plan, though, involves releasing genetically modified mosquitoes made by a corporation that breed in with the Zika-skeeters made by nature, and then that species dies off within one generation before maturing enough to breed (because that's how they were programmed in the lab).

Which kind of sounds like the beginning of the zombie apocalypse to me ... but then again, I watch a little too much Walking Dead.  That being said, if this area down here DOES become a militarized zone and you stop seeing posts from me, please know that I enjoyed all of our virtual time together.

Oh -- and stay safe out there!
