What Lebanon is talking about this week:
The walk to school, some 30 years later.
I make it back home (to central PA -- my original home) every two years or so, and this most recent trip, I decided to start a new tradition: I walked FROM the location featured in the first photo TO the location seen in the second photo ... and back again.
That was indeed the same walk to high school I did day after day, from 1985-1989 (give or take a few exceptions, of course). The starting point *used* to be a house, but it burned down lat year. All the same, that lot in the 500 block of East Cumberland (the very edge of the city school district boundary) was the beginning for the first leg of the journey, and I started by walking the way the stepmother said we *had* to -- straight down Cumberland and straight up 8th Ave ... but for the return trip, I cheated and took the shortcuts I took when I was younger ... down through (what was) the Daily News parking lot, on down Poplar Street, across (what was) Zweier's parking lot (there were a lot of parking lots on this path), down Walnut St past the mansion that you can now rent for weddings, through the Hebron Church parking lot and on through Hebron proper to come out at the alley across from what once was my home.
Now having completed the inaugural walk, I can't wait to see what will have changed when I take this same path again in years to come.
