I don't mean to go off on a rave here, but ...
... I've always been a believer that everyone has a story. Maybe it's the "writer-ly" instincts in me, but I've always been fascinated with the concept. I'm not much when it comes to small-talk, but put me in a room with people, and I will attempt to suss out the deeper story that each person has to tell. And, happily, Facebook helps me feed that fascination in new and exciting ways -- and nothing is more interesting that stumbling on something that is profoundly inspirational and motivational as well.
To whit: take the story of JD Ulsh (a classmate of mine at LVC in the early nineties) as told on his blog (the image for which appears in this post, or you can find it [or the Facebook version of it] at the links below). JD's ongoing stories of success and recovery are told there against the backdrop of a horrific car crash that he (and his family) survived in December 2007. Having been told that he had a 3% chance of survival, he faced down the "reality" that he might not walk again ... and through his determination and perseverance (and the support of his family and a strong religious belief), he beat those odds.
And those three little words ("beat those odds") in no way begin to convey the journey he's been on. You'll have to peruse his blog to begin to get a sense of how far he's come since that day. But trust me, if you are thinking that you're having a difficult day and are in need of perspective ... or inspiration ... or motivation ... it will be worth your time to complete said perusal.
In closing, consider his quote on the header of his blog: "Your current circumstance does not determine how far you will go, only where you begin."
