What Chicago is talking about this week:
The code-of-silence tax, courtesy of city cop Abbate.
With a 2011 population report of 2,707,120 in the city, and the city being tasked with paying an $850,000 judgment to a female bartender beaten by an overweight cop (the woman appears to be a third of his size), that means that each of us has to pay 31 to 32 cents for the crime (the civil trial came down to whether a code of silence permeated the police department and protected the perpetrator of the assault who was one of their own). Considering the coward punched and kicked the bartendress about a dozen times (apparently because it was closing time at the bar and she wouldn't serve him any longer), that's only 3 cents per strike per Chicagoan.
Of course, there will be appeals and/or attempts to collect the money for the fine from other sources I'm sure (joked the woman-beater as he left the courthouse, "I think I got a VISA card in my wallet" -- by the way, I'm sure that that company just loves that association). My idea -- something akin to an old fashion kissing booth -- with a twist. We set up Abbate in a booth and allow anyone who has 3 cents to slap, strike, kick or punch the guy. I'm sure people would travel from all around for the event and we'd raise tons of funds -- and we can use the first million to pay the city's fine and every other million thereafter can go to a charity that fights to stop violence against women.
