I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...
... I have to get this out of my system lest I snap.
When you take your dog for a walk -- it's for your dog's benefit.
I live in a dog-heavy 'hood, and if I see one more idiot engrossed in a cell phone and tugging at his or her pooch, I'm going to feel obligated to intervene -- which may include but not be limited to snapping your neck to and fro or dog-napping your pet and forcibly adopting him into my immediate family, which has been primarily dogless since '08 (I get my dog fix living vicariously through others).
[I get that there should be discipline or whatever. But I can't really be the spokesperson for that, as Demon definitely used to take me for a walk. And he had to be first, as anyone who tried to walk him with me would quickly learn through a small nip in the side to put that person in his place.]
So please take a moment and see this experience through your four legged friend's eyes -- your dog WANTS to stop and sniff where other animals have urinated (I swear it's how they communicate to each other) ... and your dog NEEDS to evaluate other dogs (even if on the other side of the street) and thus may choose to hunker down to assess the situation ... and your dog HAS to excitedly chase after a squirrel that suddenly sprints in front of him. Which means you MUST get your nose out of your phone and anticipate that which delights your dog on these walks and that you SHOULD provide your dog with adequate time to pursue dog-like activities.
Consider yourself warned. I'm watching you. And I'm going to lead a dog revolt if I don't see your behavior improve. Idiot.
