STEM jobs.
Used in a sentence: "I'm not talking about a happy ending that a flower seeks out during the pollination process (oh right, 'cause that would be a stamen job), but instead, the fact that the occupations that grew the fastest in this particular economy and that are forecast to continue to do so are STEM jobs."
During this back to school season, I have to admit I want it all (no teachers, students or parents left behind):
* more focus on Science Technology Engineering and Math fields (the STEM jobs referenced above), because we need to fill the gap of highly skilled workers in this country,
* without cutting out the Arts in our schools, because fostered creativity is what leads to innovation,
* during longer school days with more before and after school programs, because, for some kids, the time spent within the building is the only normalcy that they experience,
* while paying our teachers more (but based on merit not just on seniority or negotiated across-the-board raises), because we are literally investing in the future,
* all, of course, in buildings that haven't been flooded (Lee is apparently spanking Central PA's ass right now, if I believe the outpouring of posts on Facebook).
Good luck to those of you adjusting to empty houses (or congratulations to those of you celebrating the fact that your house is not empty) and best wishes to you teachers out there back in the classroom (hope you have a science or math lesson lined up soon)!
