What Chicago is talking about this week:
Even we need a break from electioneering season (especially with the general election just over three weeks away), and what better break than the excitement around the annual Chicago marathon -- and again on a day where temps have exceeded 80 degrees! In that spirit, let's also celebrate the launch of an innovative program that started in Philly, that's based on the concept of a morning run and that's designed to help the homeless and others down on their luck. "Back On My Feet" has officially launched in the Windy City.
Directly from their website: "BOMF is a nonprofit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of homeless populations by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem. We [...] provide a community that embraces equality, respect, discipline, teamwork and leadership. Our organization consists of much more than just running: our members participate in a comprehensive program that offers connections to job training, employment and housing. Those benefits are earned by maintaining 90 percent attendance at the morning runs three days a week for our six to nine month program."
