[Soon to be] Gone but not forgotten: the smell of chocolate wafting through Lititz Springs Park.
According to the interwebs, a century old chocolate plant is closing down in the new year at that spot, which is memorable to me as a child because it was next to the place where we held our family reunions back in the day. And, also growing up as closely as I did to Hershey, the smell of chocolate in the air was a pleasant respite from the other main central PA air-smell in *whatever* town it could be found (as for that other smell -- I'm looking at you, manure).
Although it is sad that 130 folks are losing their job, it does appear that the museum and candy store will stay open AND that there are other more modern chocolate plants in the immediate area that will continue to be run by parent company Cargill ... which means the Wilbur Buds will still be available (for those not in the know, those Buds were what Hershey copied to make his famous kisses),
And, in the spirit of missing something only after it was (almost) gone, NOW I have to add this to my itinerary for my PA Homecoming plans next fall in mid-October ... getting some chocolate buds, that is, since breathing in the chocolate air in Lititz is an activity that, by then, will be missed.
