Random Scandal Sheet for Sunday 8/2/15

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

This guy ... remember him?

To put it in perspective, little Elian Gonzalez, now no longer little, is probably only being talked about by those who caught the NatGeo channel's recent miniseries on the 2000s and who got to experience the "hindsight is 20-20" retelling of the tale of the 2000 election aka "the one with the hanging/pregnant/dimple/tri/swinging/corner chad".  (According to the source below, the plural of chad is ... chad.)

Just like their previous takes on the 80's and the 90's, this edition also is very clever at interweaving the stories of the decade and tying them together in an interesting way.  Specifically, the theory they posit is that the fact that the Clinton administration intervened and sent Elian back to Cuba was the likely reason that Gore lost Florida, seeing as how the final recount margin was only just over 500, and 50,000 more Floridian Cubans voted Republican in that election than in the one prior.

So if the moral of the story is "don't piss off the Cubans" ... and in light of the recent thawing of relationships ... I'm thinking that 2016 might end up with a similar outcome ... I, for one, can't wait to be a part of all the drama!
