Random Scandal Sheet for Sunday 4/12/15

What southern Florida is talking about this week:

How the five second rule was proven by SCIENCE, yo!

[Well, it's what I'm talking about, and I'm in southern Florida, so that will have to count.]

Sure enough, money was spent in a research lab somewhere (actually, at a university overseas ... and about a year ago ... but you know it sometimes takes news a while to cross the big pond) to prove (as seen at the first link below/to follow):

  • Time is a significant factor in the transfer of bacteria from a floor surface to a piece of food; and
  • The type of flooring the food has been dropped on has an effect, with bacteria least likely to transfer from carpeted surfaces and most likely to transfer from laminate or tiled surfaces to moist foods making contact for more than 5 seconds.

As a matter of fact, I checked the study a little deeper, and carpet transfer can go as long as 30 seconds, so if that's the flooring on which you've dropped your edibles, don't be pressured to rush to any action ... you got time!  No worries!
