And now the disclaimers ...
First, my apologies in advance for anyone who finds that statement insensitive. My goal here is to find common ground between the extremist views, because in my heart of hearts, I know that not all policepeople are racist and I know that not all interactions with folks of color go the same way as interactions with folks of non-color. I'm just saying ... why does it have to be a kill-shot? Why can't it be a maim-shot to buy time to figure everything out?
Second, I recognize that knee-capping is a bit dramatic and maybe only really happens in the movies or in Ireland (seeing as how the interwebs say that it was a common practice of the IRA in the 70's). But hey ... outside of the box solutions require outside of the box thinking.
Third, I understand that knee-capping can also be deadly, e.g. if the femoral artery is snipped and someone bleeds out. So clearly, specialized training will be required to actually launch this idea.
Fourth, I realize that knee-capping protocol could get costly. There's going to have to be a fund put aside to pay for those who were knee-capped in error (and a standard created for what constitutes a "knee-capping in error"), but I still think that it would be less expensive than the costs of riot control and grand jury investigations and lost wages of protesters and the price of looting and so on and so on ...
Fifth, I hope that you see similarities in how *this* idea (bringing knee-capping back) meshes pretty well with my other idea when it comes to school violence (which has been previously noted as ... bringing fisticuffs back), as in both situations, all parties live on to another day for a chance to work toward a bit more of a civilized advanced dispute-resolution .
So there you have it ... my public policy debate contribution. Are you (allegedly) a little young thing being (allegedly) charged by a scary man who's (allegedly) taunting you? Aim for the knee-caps! Is the guy you're trying to arrest on the sidewalk sooo big that you have to climb on his back to choke him down? From a distance ... aim for the knee-caps! Just think of the alternate endings these situations could have had ... who's with me?
