What southern Florida is talking about this week:
Unlike the 24 hour news channels*, the local news is focused on ... the Chicago river getting dyed green. Kind of ironic, for this Chicago transplant to see them reporting about the festivities back in my former adopted hometown ... so I went looking for some Florida green rivers AND I found this one up north in Gainesville. Of course, there the green is an algae blooming and not so much a St. Patty's Day celebration ... but pickers can't be choosers.
*As for those 24 hour news channels, this missing Malaysian plane helps highlight the horrible deficiencies of that cycle, where talking heads are obligated to patter endlessly about the same facts and add nothing to the conversation. Dear news emperors, your coverage has no clothes on. Boil what you have to say down to a 2 minute top of the hour update and find other things about which to patter, please. Someone on the morning news shows today finally got it right and refused to answer a question, stating, "well now you're just asking me to speculate on speculation, which I won't do". Anyway -- haven't we all seen this before? In a few days, someone will speculate that they landed in purgatory ... and everyone will say no no no ... and then later on it will turn out to be exactly that.
[Note ... although my flippancy is borne of my frustration in the lack of facts, I do, of course, respect the heartache of the families who have lost loved ones in this tragedy.]
