So far, the employees at the checkout lines of the grocery stores in southern Florida are failing the old "elevator pitch" concept.
Newly transplanted here, it's key to find the right place to fill one's pantry (anyone who followed my years in Chicago knows how intimately I am connected with my grocery provider [on retrospection, that kind of sounds like I exchange relations for dry goods ... which I don't ... just to be clear ...]).
So far, I've been to the Winn Dixie (they drew me in with their signs about a bacon fest) and to the Publix. Both times, as I was handing the cashier my cash, I asked, "So what makes you the best grocery store in town?". Winn Dixie lady hemmed and hawed, and finally spurted out, "we have great sales ... with that card" (ugh ... I thought loyalty cards were *soooo* the naughts). Publix employee did much the same, until a manager passing by jumped in to declare, "we bag your groceries for you ... and take these to your car", which, naturally, I declined, as aged-and-decrepit status is still a few years away.
I have to say ... I'm not yet impressed with an answer (that Publix manager did almost recover by sharing that "our stores are wholly employee owned", which sounded intriguingly like socialist groceries of some form or fashion). Therefore ... other grocery stores in town (except Whole "Paycheck" and Walmart, as I'm familiar with your business models) ... conisder yourself ON NOTICE ... I'm a-comin' to your checkout line, and I'm a-expectin' to be wowed by your reply.
