I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...
... I just can't quite get behind the holiday decoration strategy here in the 'hood. Last week, workers came and tied two real trees tightly together around the lampposts all up and down the streets all around Wrigley.
And while at first I thought ... "How clever! How cute!" ... I'm now having my doubts. Since all the trees are on well traveled streets, no one dare decorate them for fear of vandalism (although one brave soul decided to do just that with the one on the corner directly across from the police station -- I assume because they thought that one would be safe from the drunks). Additionally, as the days turn into weeks this holiday season, there doesn't appear to be any contraption to water them, which would make me think that we're just a few days away from a 'hood filled with dead holiday trees, no?
Which brings me to my final point. Having lived in and/or regularly visited these few blocks frequently throughout the dozen years I've called Chicago my adopted hometown, I happen to know that, being positioned as it is between two main drinking drags, what's really going to go on at night is that drunkards will join the menagerie of dogs that get walked through these streets every day and will be "watering" these new decorations. I'm just sayin' ... passersby have been surprised by more penises in these streets and alleys than the customers of those boys who dress like girls and work the corner down by the Whole Foods. (Big city livin' is nothin' if not excitin'.)
Look ... I don't mean to get all bah humbug for the holidays ... I just think that this idea wasn't quite thought through the whole way. (And, from an austerity point of view, I sure do hope these future urine-soaked dried out vestiges of holiday cheer were donated.)
Oh yeah ... and happy holidays to you and yours!
