What Chicago is talking about this week:
... the addition of this scarlet "A" amidst the nativity creche, the giant menorah and the pigeon warming station (I mean the eternal flame honoring all veterans who served) -- all at the city's Christkindlmarkt.
Look, I'm all for free speech, but ...
WAIT ... I recognize that any sentence that starts like that may hint at a follow up statement that basically invalidates the opening.
Regardless, the "A" is new this year and represents the Atheists and Agnostics of the "freedom *from* religion" organization, which, since this is city property, have paid for a display to encourage Atheists to "come out" to help their movement be more easily embraced.
Free speech is free speech ... and the funds were raised privately ... so although there is a bit of a dissonance in that the display is at the Christkindlmarkt (literally, the Market that celebrates the Christ Child) ... I guess to each his own. I do wonder if, in years to come, we might get a few more displays (Festivus [for the rest of us]? ... Kwanzaa? ... Boxing Day?). Only time will tell!
