Gone but not forgotten: Pearl Harbor Day this past weekend.
How do I know it wasn't forgotten? Everyone from SpaghettiOs (see the link below) to the bar across the street from me here in Chitown were "celebrating" the holiday, as you may have seen on the news since this signage deemed insensitive got a lot of coverage.
As someone who has been known to stick his foot in his mouth, I have to tell you that the cries of "too soon!" surprised me a bit ... not that I would in any way want to dishonor the memory of the nearly 2500 individuals who died on that date 72 years ago ... but just that, well, it was 72 years ago, and there's a whole generation (like the young folks in this bar) who "see you a Pearl Harbor" and "raise you a 9-11" when it comes to horrible national tragedies that get seared into the collective consciousness of the country. Of course, bar management who may or may not still be employed, please don't accept my challenge to create something similar for the 11th day of next September.
However you chose to mark the day (whether it made the national news or not) ... Pearl Harbor Day, until next year at this time, you will be missed.
