50 Things I'll Miss About Chicago -->
Thing 46:
Hearing about all the murders.
[It's my new bonus series, because I sure do love a countdown ... this one until the big move for me and mine from Chicago to Florida in just 46 days!]
I'm not being perverse here. I don't enjoy hearing about all the murders ... I just can't escape the news about them. Despite today's historic report that we're on track in 2013 for the lowest murder rate since 1967 (methinks somebody's not keeping records accurately, but mehopes it's really true) ... murder and Chitown are so synonymous that it will take multiple years of that kind of verified news of a downturn to escape the nickname of Chiraq that it was given within the last two years. (And to be fair, this kind of violent crime remains predominantly a problem in a small percentage of gang-filled 'hoods, so I've never felt like I was "too much" in danger.) The normal Monday roundup on the news down south (meaning down south in Florida ... not down south on the south side of town) is going to feel like it's missing something ... that's all I'm saying.
COUNTER: I found an article online that compared Florida statistics from 2011 to 2012, and it said that overall incidents of robbery and aggravated assault were down, but the numbers of murders and forcible sex offenses increased in the state ... so maybe it will feel more like my adopted hometown than I think! [Ok ... *there* ... with that last sentence ... that might be an example of me being perverse.]
