Determining whether that sudden sound is a gunshot or impromptu fireworks.
This was more of a problem in the early Chicago years when the apartment was in Logan Square (circa early-mid naughts), and especially around holidays that weren't necessarily on my calendar (turns out Mexicans and Puerto Ricans and Polish all have their own parade-y celebrations ... so that was basically all summer long) ... but I had the same experience here in Wrigley, and especially around any time the Blackhawks won national championships (which, let's face it, has been pretty often of late). I will miss running to the window sure that someone was dead only to see pretty things in the sky!
COUNTER: Google's giving me conflicting results ... the Ft. Lauderdale police banned any personal fireworks this past 4th of July ... but the TNT Fireworks Supercenter appears to be just outside of town in Dania Beach. As for the sound actually being a gunshot instead ... well ... it is Florida, after all ...
