Random Memorial for Monday 12/3/12

Gone but not forgotten:  women in the Ikea bathroom.

It's the holidays ... which means it's time to shop catalogs and make wish lists and embrace the consumerism of gift-giving that is a necessity to keep our economy inching along.  And this news may be two months old (it takes me awhile sometimes to get caught up on fun stuff like this) ... but did you hear about the Ikea ad that air-brushed out the momma from the family pictured in the bathroom getting ready for bed -- when that ad was distributed in Saudi Arabia that is!?

I'm all for cultural sensitivity and adapting to the local conditions (which is what the group of Americans to which I belonged that was studying abroad in 1990 was encouraged to do after we were taken to task by Klaus F for not assimilating as we should have) ... but Ikea always seemed so progressive with its recycled goods and its Swedish sensibility.  And it's not like they were bikini pajamas or anything -- there was a lot covered!

Oh well ... marketing momma figure banished from the shared family bathroom advert ... you are missed (but not by some) ...
