Random Soapbox for Saturday 4/21/12

I don't mean to go off on a [overdue] rave here, but ...

... here's to the thoughtfulness of boxer Sergio Martinez, who spends time outside of the ring working with bullied children and battered women.

The extent that I follow boxing is relatively limited to the fights of the Klitschko brothers (the story of two guys who promised their momma that they would never fight each other, no matter how successful they became -- and who have upheld that promise despite having oodles of money dangled in their faces by people with misplaced priorities (like Don King)) -- and that in itself is further limited by the fact that the Klitschko fights rarely get air time here in the US because they are such technical successes in the ring that the fights aren't "exciting" enough for an American audience.

But I'm glad I paused to read the article about Argentinian Martinez (although from Argentina, the Wiki says that he's part Greek and part Spain-ish), who wants to show that there is a place for a certain kind of violence (i.e.  in the ring) that should never occur outside of it.  His work with bullied students was more known (HBO honored him before his fight last month) as you don't publicize visits to a safehouse ... but a hip hip hooray to him from me for being a conscientious pugilist.

Sounds like I may have a new fighter to follow ...
