Random Thought for Thursday 1/26/12

Sadly, I can't be there, and I will miss the opportunity to have a fried bologna sandwich on a pretzel roll. [Of course, that's assuming they will still offer that delicacy in the revived Bologna Fest happening this weekend back home in Lebanon.]

After finding my Lebanon Bologna for a time behind the deli counter of Strack and VanTil's here in Chicago (apparently I didn't buy enough as they stopped stocking it), I'm now dependent on myself or others who are travelling back home to return with it (and, as lunch meat, it needs to stay chilled, so there's that additional complication).

Even with the recent popularity of independent film (Lebanon PA is in rotation now on Showtime), or angry town hall-ers (that was the last election cycle), or the occasional scandalous murder (whether the Blue Eyed Six or something more modern), the town where I spent most of my youth is still most famously known for the item it drops each New Year's Eve -- the giant Lebanon Bologna.

I hope those of you back home all go and have an extra slice or two (you have to have both sweet and regular, of course) for me!
