What Chicago is talking about this week:
Well there's not much baseball chatter [ ;) as the kids would say], and the Marathon run today is already over (and our thoughts go out to the family of 35 year old NC fireman William Caviness, who apparently collapsed 500 yards from the finish, and died at the hospital about 2 hours later) ...
... but there is "Pandora's Box: Joseph Cornell Unlocks the MCA Collection" in its final days at the Museum of Contemporary Art (it runs until 10/16). Somehow in ten years of living here and two different vacations to Chitown that pre-date my move, it was a Chicago-y thing that I hadn't yet done. And, to be honest, with the Cornell exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute being one of my favorite collections to see, it was what really drove me to sample "modern" art.
After getting acclimated (the first exhibit looked like it was under construction -- and then I realized that the "construction" was actually the artwork) and after debating whether the light fixtures in the installation rooms were part of the art or just the ceiling, I did enjoy myself. May I recommend the view from the leaf shaped circular staircase at the fourth floor (available any time) or (specific to the Cornell exhibit) the video project from Pipilotti Rist entitled "Schlurfe meine Ozean" that features "Wicked Game" and turns that melancholy tune into the true misery the song's lyrics really convey (you-tube link below -- wait for it at about the 3 minute mark).
You have one week left to catch this show (on Tuesdays, museum admission is free for Illinois residents).
