Random Wordplay for Wednesday 10/6/10

National Day Golden Week.

Used in a sentence: Happy National Day Golden Week!

Let me preface this by saying I will attempt to rein in any burgeoning xenophobia by remembering how difficult it can be sometimes to explain Groundhog's Day or Daylight Savings Time to those not brought up in our American culture, but when I found out this week that economic transactions between us and China were halted so that one of several Golden Weeks could be celebrated, I was intrigued by the notion of a communist government mandated week off. It turns out these are newer concepts (launched in 1999-2000) and that only two remain on the calendar after one was shut down in '07. A few days off carefully placed around a weekend allow the common folk to travel to see family and to have a "better standard of living".

Feel free to explain your allegiance to Mao and to reference this blogpost if you want to take off the next few days! Heck, go ahead and make it a whole Golden Columbus Week if you'd like!
