Random Memorial for Monday 8/2/10

Gone but not forgotten: uncommonly eccentric folk who found the way to wield political power to create and save America's national parks.

I'm using the summer to knock down the total % on the old DVR (the Emmys are just four weeks away and fall TV premiers shortly thereafter), and I've finally seen all of the Ken Burns' series on the National Parks. As someone who has never been to one (although I've traipsed through multiple state versions of the same and I'm assuming those trails from the zoo in Palm Springs didn't encroach on the lands of the Joshua Tree), I highly recommend the series (although I have to think that recommending going to the actual sites is probably where I should be focusing those type of energies)!

Of particular note, keep an eye on John Muir (of eccentric behavior that does nothing to disguise his passion for that in which he believes) and Stephen Mather (a manic depressive whose mental well-being was most improved by getting out to experience nature) and take a look at all they accomplished on behalf of the National Park systems.

He who said: "Take a course in good water and air; and in the eternal youth of Nature you may renew your own", you are missed.
