Random Soapbox for Saturday 6/26/10

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... airlines need to be held accountable for the safety and welfare for pets flown as "cargo". Have you heard of the case of Tucker, the Great Dane, whose shortened life due to damage suffered on a flight on Continental is drawing attention to the "worst practices" surrounding this activity? In Tucker's owners own words:

My Great Dane suffered injuries and illness while in the care of Continental Airlines Cargo QuickPak. He was on a flight from Honolulu to Seattle which had a layover in Houston. Tucker arrived in Seattle in such grave condition that he had to be euthanized just a few hours after he arrived. He was covered in vomit, feces, saliva and blood. Tucker could barely lift his head, move and didn't respond to any stimuli - food, water, our voices, etc. I have never seen my dog like this in the entire time I've had him. Tucker was clearly suffering and had been gravely mishandled. The callousness that we've been subjected by the airlines is outrageous. We want justice for Tucker and to prevent this from happening to anyone else's pet in the future. Our pets are our Loved Ones, NOT Luggage.

It's been over two years since putting down my pit bull Demon and just a few months since losing Mystery, and I can't imagine having the sense of loss from those experiences being aggravated by the actions of others in whom their care is trusted. Out of anger and frustration often comes focused advocacy, and I applaud these efforts to draw attention to these rules in hopes of making sure more pets aren't lost this way!
