Random Soapbox for Saturday 1/2/10

I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but ...

... why is it that the go-to cartoons being used by marketers right now are actually pretty disgusting upon repeat viewings. Those Mucinex "break up the party" commercials -- boogers, artfully recreated to make you buy their product. Not so jarring at first -- but the more you see it, the more it sinks in that this is just an animation featuring all the things you find on the walls above boys' urinals in public bathrooms. And let's not forget the creepy Charmin bears -- and the littlest one who presents his backside to his mom for inspection. Again, cute? It's an ad touting the fact that the toilet paper won't get caught in your ass hairs. It's time to bring back Mr. Whipple! Or at least to learn a lesson and use effective animation like from a few years back with the iron who cried while staring at the dryer because he was made obsolete by the use of special fabric softener. We're on a slippery slope of bad taste cartooning.
