Gone but not forgotten: MLK, Jr.
Kind of makes sense for today, eh? Here's some random circularity -- for us in the US, it's now often seen as a day of service and was moved from Jan 15 (MLK, Jr's actual birthday) to the third Mon in Jan when Reagan made it an official holiday (begrudgingly, supposedly only after it was sent to him with a veto-proof majority). In Japan, Jan 15 was observed as a national "coming-of-age" day, a kind of geisha/samurai/kabuki bar/t mitzvah celebration, until it was moved to the second Mon in Jan in 2000 -- which, in turn, was the same year that all 50 states finally celebrated some iteration of the MLK, Jr holiday. So ... what do you say? In honor of the day, maybe good night and pleasant dreams?
