Gone but not forgotten:
The 49.
As the hours pass since the tragedy, names have become faces and faces have become stories.
I went to check the link I had posted yesterday from NPR that was starting to list the victims, and I had to wait an extra amount of time as the page loaded because there were SO many pictures on that page. Let that sink in for a moment.
And to those of you who think that you can't relate to the victims because they represent the "other", pay particular attention to the story of the mother who liked to go out dancing with her gay son (he survived and she did not), or the straight guy who went out to the club with his girlfriend (he did not).
Then picture your name on the list. Or your loved one on the list. Think about if your weekend plans -- or your loved one's weekend plans were the last plans ever made. And ask yourself what you can do to change the way this world works. One step at a time ... starting with you. Because inaction and silence WILL lead to more death. Because we are a community larger than our labels. Because it's our job to take care of each other.
And hug your loved ones close.
