L V C || C L Memory 142
In 142 days, I'll be back on campus at my alma-mater at an extra special homecoming as Lebanon Valley College continues celebrating its 150th birthday. In honor of that countdown, here's memory #142: IN MEMORIAM ... Dr. Eugene Brown.
In a small liberal arts college such as LVC, the teacher:student ratio ensures that you're going to get to know your professors well because they are in front of your classroom year after year. And although I would never go so far as to choose favorites within a department, I did gravitate more toward those classes being taught by Dr. Brown. I recall more debates and discussions where creativity was encouraged (or maybe it was just that he ran more in the seminar format) ... and I came to appreciate the "edge" that he offered attributed to his past experiences in Vietnam. (Sadly, it was that same past that haunted him until his all too early death.)
Of course, this was also the guy who once came to class, started to lecture and then carefully removed his jacket ... his tie ... and his pants ... before apologizing for taking the night medicine instead of the daytime option and dismissing us for the day. Upon reflection, maybe I just liked a little unpredictability in my college days.
