Gone but not forgotten: the teenage deer that sacrificed his life for this photo.
Just kidding ... today's memorial is actually for the other being in the picture -- my bio-dad, who passed away a year ago yesterday, with hospice workers by his side.
I don't want to be inauthentic ... my relationship with him over the years wasn't very close ... and I had said my goodbyes to him months before he died when I went to visit him in what was more of my case-worker role at the end of his life. I actually didn't make it back east for his funeral, but I do plan to visit his final resting spot in Ft. Indiantown Gap when I finally make it back "home" sometime this year, as my 25th high school reunion should be happening at some point in 2014.
I will say that with the anniversary of his death being just two days before the anniversary of my birth each year ... I've got a built-in reminder about how time marches on, and how there's a circle of life, and how any other cliche that's appropriate for this situation can be applied.
So Ralph "Deer-slayer" Neidermyer, Sr. ... one year from your passing ... in some form or fashion by many of your wives, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and other family and friends ... you are missed.
