Random Thought for Thursday 8/12/10

I was saved from having to dissect a cat since I didn't have AP Bio, but I cut up a frog and a rat and an earthworm or two when I was learning me some science in high school and I can remember a few things from that experience (specifically that the smell of formaldehyde lingers and that our vivisected rat was pregnant). Now, the Japanese come to the rescue of what the young kids apparently say is a controversial educational practice by scientifically engineering see-through animals! In 2007, it was frogs. In 2010, it was see-through goldfish (which I guess should be renamed transluci-fish since the color scheme's all wrong). Can see-through cats be next in 2013 (and is Grandma Wrinkles an early prototype)?

Combined with the news this week that we are close to releasing a scientifically engineered mosquito into the wild to defeat malaria (with unknown consequences), the sci fi scariness coming to a theatre near you might suddenly seem like a documentary!
