What Chicago is talking about this week:
Severe weather for this summer has begun -- and the I-80 corridor saves the city yet again. I always knew to be wary when the radar turned from yellow to orange to red ... but last night there were purple spots that translated to tornadoes. But as with so much of severe weather that barrels across Illinois, everything stayed south of I-80. This same road often determines weather in ways I don't quite understand, like "severe ice storm south of the I-80 corridor but fluffy snows north of it". I feel pretty sure that Ike never planned for that effect when he championed the interstate system, but whatever keeps us safe in the city works for me.
Speaking of other uses for the interstate system, have you heard about how pioneering drug traffickers make good use of it for easy distribution of their product? Back home, it was I-81 providing the flow of hard drugs out of NYC and here it's permitting easy distribution of marijuana across middle America. Do you think Ike thought about that interstate use? Next time you're on one of those highways, keep your eyes on the skies and don't make eye contact with the car next to you (and watch the road in front of you too, of course)!
